Alright, so I re-baited/lured almost all my sets sunday after 5-7 days because its been getting really cold. Using some louder lures and I have had a few coyotes walking right past my sets within 5-10 yards and not breaking stride. Just keep on keeping on or change things?

Give it time. Sometimes a set needs to “cool off” for a week or two before a coyote will work it. Be patient. No need to rebait or lure after only a week unless it rained a lot, if anything just a little squirt of urine.

What Bob said. Do the best you can to make sure your set is upwind of the travel path and let it be. Going back to rebait only adds human odor. Stay away unless it gets swamped by rain. Only get close enough to check that the trap has not been dug up or uncovered.

I would leave em alone . It’s easy to get too much lure or bait and the coyotes will stall out .

This thread is close to something I've been wondering. Say you have a gravel road that is traveled regularly by coyotes from the sign left but it's also driven rather regularly. I've been itching to set on the road but drags are iffy. Can a big hole be dug in the bank just below road level, say 20 feet from road, and be counted on to have a coyote investigate it? The set would not be visible from the road but the smells should be detected. That way any caught animal would most likely not be noticed by drivers. It'd be like groundhog sized with dirt visible by looking over the bank.

Just what coyotes and other animals do. I'm a firm believer in the one track mind theory. If they aren't in the right mood to react to whatever you have done, bits of no consequence to them. If I can snare or blind set a trail, I'll do that before putting in a lures/baited set. Similiar to why I prefer blind sets over raccoons in trails over DPs.

It may not SEEM related to your question, but this thread gives a little insight into how coyotes may react to something new in their environment...

Set a trap right where they are walking. I have set traps 10 yards apart and only caught them in one single trap site...over and over. The one 10 yards away from where they are walking never got touched.

I agree with letting them sit and cool off if you will but also a firm believer that 5 yards(15 feet) might as well be a mile. I set as close to sign as I can. I have made sets what I thought was close enough and checked empty traps for a long time. In my opinion there is no such thing as to close.

Wish I had more time to trap....

In a good location I will make a set on either side of the trail to take advantage of changing wind direction. Unless it has rained there is no need to relure/bait. I just caught a Bobcat in a set that had sat for 10 days. He obviously smelled it

First thing imo is the following why is the coyotes ( perferable) going to be where HE IS OR GOING TO TRAVEL. Once you get that kind of figured.
Then move on to type of set and few other things guys tend to focus on .
But the first item is what to focus on.
If he goes by keeps on traveling imo as sniper say one track mind is one reason or our way of looking at it .
It's a good chance with in 7 days he has seen that set.
Personally once I lure or bait a set it never gets anything else beside me driving by at a distance until it catches then and only then do I relure with some tbing else.

Which way are the prevailing winds?
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

My guess is the set is over lured still hot with your scent but could be the wind. If you have dogs going past it give it time, I think they know its there and just being cautious.

Too much lure, usually one time is all you need
In wy my dog sniffed lure at set locations I used the year before

Being on location is of utmost importance But if it’s in a wide open place where you are exactly sure where they may be running. I throw out a cow skull hip socket or big leg bone that has bleached white a little down wind of the set as they will see it and circle down wind of the bone they are seeing and will them smell your lure

If the wind changes direction for a few days I move the bone to where it’s back downwind of the set

Another thing is you could be using too much lure and can satisfy his curiousity from further away

And another thing is I will not get in this debate but you could try some different lures because they are not are created equal And I have heard they attracted to all lures and that could very well be true but if it doesn’t hold his attraction long enough to get caught or if you don’t catch him as soon as he walks up it doesnt do you much good

That there is pretty sound advice.

Coyotes can and often do cover 10 or more miles a night. In order to accomplish this, they are going at a pretty fast pace. While zooming past your set, they likely have a specific destination on their mind. Follow in that direction and look for where he slows down or intersects a perpendicular edge (like a crossing path, or edge of a different ground cover.) Make another set there.
