Has anyone on here ever seen a trophy class roadkill buck and weren't able to keep it or the head?
I did yesterday, the predators and scavengers had been eating good for the past few days and I wasn't able to keep the head of a massive nontypical buck either 16 or 17 pts. Widest spread was middle finger to elbow.
I was bummed I wasn't able to keep the head but oh well

We had an 8-10 point hit by a yellow bus. Stone dead.

If you hit a spike in SD it's your if it's a wall hanger they take it the same with road kill, I'd rather have the deer then the horns anyway.

I frequently see road kill deer with the heads cut off, when I travel I71, I75, I71and some of the state highways, especially during the rut.

In Pa., if you pick up a road kill you can get a free permit from the PGC. If you want the antlers, it’s $10 a point.

At least someone is getting some use from them.

Me too Jerry. The meat was spoiled and critters were eating good.
Keith happens here all the time and without the ok from the warden it's treated just like poaching. Is that the case there.

If you cut off the head of a road killed buck in Pa., it’s considered Unlawfully Taking of a deer. The PGC can and has cited folks....$800 fine + costs. And possible license revocation.

That said, there are a lot of headless bucks every November here too.

I was coming up 23 from Marion the other day and there was a monster laying in the median. All I had was a little pocket knife and the traffic wasn't too bad. My wife talked me out of it though. Dang woman.

Adam, it's illegal to do anything with roadkill deer, here in Ohio, without permission. They do generally just give you a receipt for asking. I have been allowed to take 4 roadkill deer over the years. All 4 were antlerless. I don't know if antlered deer are treated differently.

Ohio roadways are littered with rotten deer. Many dead deer per mile in some areas. It makes traveling in hot weather unpleasant. I think the state should set up some site where you just submit a picture of the dead deer, with the coordinates from your phone and they send you a reciept for legal possession. It would keep the roads much nicer.

Oh that makes sense. From the sound I thought it was free game for a second.
Yeah of this buck had been hit anywhere else in the state that head would've been gone instantly

Easy to pick up roadkill here in WI. Can register it online or call it in, but you need to take the whole thing. I guess that's the tradeoff, you get the meat/antlers/bait and they get the deer off the side of the road.

It's a whole different story if it's wounded, then you gotta wait for LE to come dispatch.
