If the local parts store has it in stock I'll usually buy it local. But if the local shop says "it will be here in 10 business days" I tell them no thanks, and buy online. If these local places won't update their ordering practices to try to be at least a little competitive, I don't feel the least bit guilty not buying local.

I order online a lot. I'm not just saving money, I get more selection and I don't have to drive around to 5 places hoping somebody has what I need. Or, the local place can order it for me - I can order it for me.
I don't see any moral high ground in buying local. Somebody is getting the sale and somebody isn't.

I bought 50 pounds of potatoes and 50 pounds of onions from a local farm, that has a store, on 10/30/2019. They grow potatoes, greenbeans, cabbage and other vegetables. Yesterday, Diane noticed that the onions say product of Canada on the bag. I thought I was buying locally grown onions.
Keith This is not a surprise at all unfortunately. Most orchards and pumpkin patches around here all truck in extra as they can't produce enough for their demand. Last year I was up a dead end road deer hunting, and the local Christmas tree farm there had a semi load of trees being delivered. Was kinda surprised as they have several hundred acres of trees.

Keith This is happening at local farmers markets too. Most people who shop at a local farmers market will do so to spend local , help out a local farmer , consume locally sourced products and not contribute to things being trucked in from a distance. Latest trend , just like the farm to table trend. Sad thing is people are paying a premium for these products thinking it is local and spending their money to keep it in their community as apposed to getting it at a supermarket which may have products from far away. Buyer beware......

I like buying local eggs. It's a small scale chicken enthusiast that sells manure covered eggs. They are cheap so I wash the eggs myself. I'm fairly certain the eggs are not trucked in.

I don't see any moral high ground in buying local. Somebody is getting the sale and somebody isn't. I have lived in the same town for 77 years, at one time we had 4 gas station, a drug store, three grocery stores, a theater along with a hardware store, 2 barbers, 2 restaurants and 2 bars. Now we have 2 bars and 2 restaurants that close Sept first. So know I have to shop on line or drive 30 or 16 miles to shop. Keep shopping on line and you will end up the same way if you live in a small town. JMO

My neighbor has chickens. Keep the eggs the way you get them (in manure) and they don't need refrigeration. The natural coating seals the eggs. I just need to walk next door to get eggs. Very fresh eggs taste excellent. Way , way better than store bought. Most people don't know that eggs in the supermarket may be 6 months to a year old. Huge difference in taste. Just for info , very fresh eggs like that do very poorly hard boiled. They stick to the shell like glue. You lose a lot to the shell , no way around it. Also just for info , Egglands Best brand is popular due to taste , most people think it is because they are organic , not true , it is because they have a shorter time from being laid to market. Taste is better because they are fresher. When my neighbor's daughter wants to do colored eggs for Easter , she buys them from the supermarket. Otherwise they stick ,very bad.
