Soooooo..... sick of stacking wood. What if any is the disadvantage of piling vs stacking except for space

If it is dry, and you are putting it in under cover, space is the only advantage I can see. If I have time after cutting and splitting I like to pile it. I think the air gets to it a bit better too dry. I might be wrong.
When I don't have time it just goes in a heap like it did this year, then into the basement. I have only burned wood for heat and I suppose someday I will have to have a back up. Not looking forward to that.

In a heap, the bottom layer is gonna soak up tons of water and become useless unless you have a way to keep it all off the ground but even a ton of plywood as a base wouldn't work because it'll hold the water and the bottom can't circulate. Stacking it is easier because you can lay down 2x4s to get it off the ground.

I think it dries better stacked vs piled. It is also easier for me to judge how fast I am using it and how much I have left stacked.

Use some wood pallets to stack on. Their up about 4 inches and air can get under to some degree.
Additionally build a shed roof up against an out building. Then its covered from the rain mostly.

I tend to cut a lot of wood at one time and pile it for future use as I clear pasture. All I save for myself is hedge and don't rot so I can't speak for that part. The pile I had 5 years ago was just thrown in a heap as high as I could manage. The pack rats and other critters had that pile full of stickers and other trash by the time it all got used up. The stacked rows from the cut a few years prior to that one didn't get near the attention by the rats and such. I went back to stacking this past winter.
Not as many places for the packrats to stash stuff, easier to load out of, and less space are the advantages of stacking. Less time would be the only advantage I can see to a tossed pile.

Stacking allows better drying (seasoning). Had firewood (cut & split) in a pile a bit longer than planned and when I finally got around to stacking it, the bottom pieces that had direct contact with the soul had some rot, not a lot, but I don't care for that when I've gone to that much effort.

Stacked saves room and is better if you are going to keep it an extra year or two. Round wood like gum, maple, water oak and any other that gets pethy needs to be split so it will dry. I seldom get more than a year at a time and usually just pile it up. If a snow is coming I throw a huge tarp over it, not so much to keep it dry but I hate digging for it in a snow pile. My wife says wet wood burns better and who am I to argue with her.

A pile of wood is just a pile of wood. A stack of wood is a thing of beauty.

Unless you enjoy ,the work,of cutting and stacking...or use it as an excercise event....I perfer to do other things with my spare time...and walk over to the Thermostat and have a nice even heat. I use to burn ,when a cord of wood was cheap.

We burn wood at our cabin and use it for making maple syrup in the spring. A full lean-to is a beautiful sight! Those racks are about 6' wide and 3 logs deep.
