I have seen some methods on here on taking rats under and through the ice.
How about some pictures and explanations?
Primarily with a 160 body grip.

Whats with the freezing conditions here in Mid-Michigan I'm looking at ratting through the ice.

Or go ice fishing! Which I can do later.

I use a 110 setup with potato chunks on the triggers. The 2 lath setup allows for easy adjustments to put it under the bottom of the ice, in deep water you can use a cross stick at the top to keep it from falling in the hole. Check every 4-5 days for better results if allowed.

You can looking for the bubbles under the ice to find where there dens and runs. while the ice is still clear. then just put your trap there .

160s work great. If you can't feel the run, a potato slice or orange peel on the trigger will take them as long as you are on the bubbles.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I use bridger 159's, baited with carrot works. 1.5 coils on hagz brackets on 3/8 fiberglass rod catches them too. I use a bait holder about 2-3" above trap with carrot as well. Finding bubble trails and setting them puts you on location but one doesnt alway get clear ice conditions. Setting in probable locations of travel works fairly well for me when bubble trails are not present. Around huts and feeders. Pinch points in vegetation and point formed by cattails/vegetation work too. Especially points coming off a dike or a bank that has dens. I went out today and had a about 2" of ice, it was cloudy ice and finding bubbles wasnt happening. Pics are from last year, the ice was awesome

All of the above are showing you body grippers in runs or with baits in and around bubble trails or houses. Also remember that with ice on the water the rats swim right below the ice so set your body grippers accordingly.

Here in WI we can not molest or enter a rat house or structure. Rats make what we like to call pushups which are really a feed bed with a roof over them. You can use your ice spud to chop around the edge of the pushup as close as you can get. The entrance or dive hole where the rats enter the pushup will have thinner ices most likely and also an opening when you reach in and you can feel with your gauntlet on the mat of vegetation at about the water level or a bit below. If used heavily the pushup will not b frozen and when you clean out some material you should find clippings etc. if the top of the push up is frozen the rats have quite coming to the feed bed for good or for a time. You can set foothold traps in the pushups with chain attached to a stake. These are good locations with lots of activity but you will get some plugged traps at times as the rats carry lots of material in and out of these structures. You will typically find these 30-100 feet from the larger houses and many times in heavier vegetation where the rats are finding their food.

It is, but its what we do. No baited traps for me at this point, find runs thru cattails and sleeve push ups. started setting a marsh around noon today, was back at truck at dark with 14 big rats and maybe 50 traps out. they are only at the bottom when they leave bank runs or deep house runs, its a lotta work for them to stay deep....

Some like to use those muskrat hockey pucks. They're designed for 159s but work on 110s if you cut them smaller. But carrots might work just as good.

I like to use grapefruit or orange peels. They keep there color unlike potatoes that turn brown right away.
A trick I use Is to just zip tie one of the BGs jaws to your lath. Since your using baited sets under water you don't need much adjustment since your just under water and right In the bubble run with the trap.
Another trick when checking under Ice sets Is to run 2 wires down the stake. Strip off some of the insulation and wrap the 2 wire ends across the trap jaws. So when then trap Is sprung the wires come apart and the circuit Is broken. On the top end you just use a continuity device to see If the circuit has been broken.

That's true LOL

I suspended a few colony traps In bubble runs and caught a few rats but It's a lot of work for what you get. 2 traps side by side worked pretty good well lets say they caught a few rats. The chain saw Is your best friend.
But I still suck at It LOl

I've been trying some of those Hags brackets with 3/8s rods. Using 160s in narrow cattail pinch points set just under the ice. Much easier to keep track of your traps with the longer stakes and seems to be working pretty well. Baited sets and the light let in by the hole seem to work better when the rats been under the ice and snow for a few months.

I think lemon juice is what some use to preserve potato or apple chunks.
