I grew up about 60 miles from that dam. We used to catch catfish and sauger in the tailrace. The poor fella that was killed had a brother that used to be a fur buyer in my area. It was common knowledge that you sold your good fur to someone else, but ole Leroy Angel would pay top dollar for the junk nobody else wanted. It must have worked out for him. He was in the fur business for a lot of years.

No but my camp is near the old town of Austin PA. The town was destroyed in 1911 when a poorly constructed dam broke. you can go there today and see the large pieces of broken concrete dam, many still standing.

Eh...wot?

The problem of aging dams leading to failure will be exascerbated in the future with the ongoing climate change.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Thanks for posting that Lugnut . I've been through Austin a few times and always stop and look at the remains of the dam but never seen the pictures of the town before and after the flood .

No problem Rick. The wife of a camp member bought a book about Austin and we all read it. He is the one that took me down there for the first time. It’s actually pretty amazing when you see the height of the dam and how it just cracked vertically and huge pieces of it got shoved to the side.

I can only imagine that wall of water and all those logs from the stock pond battering their way through town.

Eh...wot?

The spencer dam that's in the first article was a very small dam. My property is roughly 25 miles down stream from there. I had a 12' to 15' wall of ice and water come through even after it spread out. It leveled my whole place. I would not want to see a bigger dam go out. There were many, many more ppl that had it worse than me.
I'll try to get a pic up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
