My sister is a new homeowner. She just installed a flagpole outside of her house and is flying the US flag on top and a Marine Corps flag just below it. Neither She nor anybody in our family as ever serve in the military. I told her that she does not have the right to fly that flag and she disagrees. She also posted a picture of it on Facebook and said Semper Fi. I told her to not say that unless she has served or has a family member that has served. Don't know why she is doing it but what are your thoughts on this. Thank you all

Glad to hear your answers. I just didn't want her to be accused of Stolen Valor. Her heart is definitely in the right place and she has no ill intentions. I just did not know what the rules are on this and did not want her to show any disrespect. We are patriotic family who loves our country and respects the military. I just wanted to see what veterans thought about this

I wasn't a Marine but am retired military after serving in two branches. I wish all Americans had the love of this country that she seems to have. I am also proud to see the different branch flags flying. I think I can speak for most in that we are proud to have served the greatest nation on earth and the people that make up the fabric of this nation. I am honored by her display.

Tell her if she'll fly a US Army flag instead of a Marine one the neighbors will stop throwing eggs at her house.

Kudus to her for flying the American Flag. Note that in your post you did not say which flag you had an issue with her flying, but I assumed it is the Marine Corp flag. Flying the Marine Corp flag suggests, to me at least, that she or someone else in the household served or is serving in the Marines. I did not serve in the military and would never consider flying the flag of one of the branches of our military, regardless of how much I support them.

I see that today is the birthday of the Marines. Flying the Marine Corp flag in recognition of that special day would be a token of support, flying it all the time is different.

I kindly disagree with you … I didn't serve, but my was Navy. I believe the Marine just had an anniversary, and saw quite few places and heard on TV that we should celebrate the occasion … and that is exactly what she is doing... I say OOH RAH to my Marine friends and they all say it back to me... so they aren't offended by that, because they know I am showing my respect for them and the Marines.

Honoring our military is not stolen valor.
Stolen valor would be claiming recognition for service not rendered.
While some may assume a home flying a service flag has a member serving in that branch it's not a claim of such. I'm also sure she would be quick to correct that assumption should it be made.

That was what I was concerned with. I have and will never have any problem with the American flag nor any other flag that represents the military. But no one in our family nor her served and I did not want her to be accused of Stolen Valor and yes if anybody asked her if she served she would quickly say she did not nor anyone in her family. She is just patriotic American like me and the rest of our family. I just wanted to get opinions on this and I appreciate all our veterans who served thank you to all
