Hello. We will be going to CO after New Years to ski. We are going to rent a Suburban as 6 of us will be going. 2 of the last 3 return trips have had horrible weather on the return trip so I don't really want to take my truck(would be fine) and my sons car even with snow tires(sits low). More than likely the Suburban will have 4 wheel drive but they can never guarantee it. Any tricks upon making the reservation to guarantee 4 wheel drive or able to back out? Thank you for your time.

Who are you renting from? I have traveled the better part of 20 years for work and have never had an issue getting an all wheel drive vehicle when requested. If the rental agency will not guarantee the vehicle you requested then tell them you will move on to someone that will.

Maybe you could rent a day ahead just to make sure you can get a 4wd rental vehicle. Sometimes the rental places run out of vehicles.

The suburban should have all wheel drive.
You can save a lot of money if you purchase your rental car insurance from you household broker before the trip and by-pass having to get their insurance. Sometimes a month policy is just as much as a week policy so just in case you are snowed in somewhere Just present it at time of pick-up.
Don't let them tell you that All Seasons tires are good to go, Snow Tires have to have a "little snow flake" on the sidewalls.

When 3 friends and I went to Alaska fishing this summer, we looked at rental cars and the price was astronomical. We rented a 4x4 4door truck on Turo for 35% of what the rental car place wanted. Maybe try Turo or similar out???? My insurance agent sold me a week long "addition" to my normal vehicle insurance for "non-owned" vehicles.

Don't rent anything without some insurance, and most places in the winter have 4wd but you may have to pay extra for it on holidays or close to them.
