The best way to kill time at the deer stand. Yesterday was apple wood smoked chicken injected with creole butter. Today its hickory smoked wild Turkey wrapped in bacon. 4 flavors to try. Creole butter, roasted garlic, honey bbq, and green egg seasoning - wirly bird. Deer hunting sure is rough.

Dang that sounds like some good eats.. We usually have a pot a chili or venison stew, some kinda casserole.. Don't have anyone that stays right at camp to cook while everyone's in woods.. We also don't allow any wives or none hunters in camp..So no designated camp cook..

This year my wife made a batch of vegetable soup and we put it in quart jars. Took it to Grouse camp. It was fast and easy to heat up and was really good easy to pack in a cooler. About a quart per person.
It is what it is.

Mac Were not in camp. That smoker is at the bottom of the stairs to my stand. The shack is about 100 yds away.

Pat totally forgot to post the best part... We also had chili, pumpkin bread, blueberry dessert and my father in law cooked breakfast skillets both mornings. Those poor boys forgot they could eat so well!

in the past
we went out for fish fry on Friday generally al you could eat peach till the perch in Michigan ran low , then cod. Saturday was lasagna, my mom and dad would make this up in a big pan and freeze it , of course served with a Cesar salad and garlic bread. Sunday, some one was always done hunting early afternoon I have an uncle who is more a football fan and than a hunter but he liked to come with he could watch the turkey. we would have a full thanksgiving dinner , stuffing , cranberries , green bean casserole.
going to be different this year , due to medical problems in the family we are not getting together for deer camp. my great uncle is in hospice , his sons are keeping close to him. my great aunt whos house we stayed at had a pacemaler and heart valve recently.
so my son and I are hunting with my son's friend's family , sounds like chili and I don't know what else , I volunteered to bring some soup so chili and soup.

do the deer wander up to the smoker wondering what it is ? and you pop them right there? They dont seem to be bothered by it.. it's not pulling them in but they're not shying away from the stand either. We don't have a cook, everyone brings and shares.

Took the last roll of last years buck summer sausage out of the freezer for my son to enjoy with crackers and cheese in the blind this weekend. Made it clear this was the last roll of summer sausage...so please get another one, bud! He laughed and is ready to rock and roll next saturday. Aside from that there will most likely be the other traditions...donuts, pulled pork sandwiches, you name it.
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

That sounds wonderful, Pat! We both hunt out our back door these days and our closest neighbors are all within a few miles of here and many do the same, so we have become the place to go at the end of opening day of rifle season. I make a monstrous batch of chili and get the fireplaces roaring, and everyone shows up here throughout the evening depending on if they have deer to take care of. I love it! This one started with 8 pounds of venison. Zim makes a beauty of a grilled cheese too. I also like to make a big layer salad for anyone who is interested. The first year I made it, Zim was chuckling to himself about having a salad with buck camp chili and I was worried that was a bit girlie girlish for me to do, but I was vindicated on that one. All of the guys chowed that salad down with the chili and carried on about it being a great combination. All good and a lot of good times and great stories. Good luck, everyone! (I do have one deer down already and we're having venison fondue tonight for the second time! )
