i've got one and love it. usually only need one of the bags.
I was lucky, a friend found a mess of them at a surplus auction and I was able to get the sleeping bag and a med box for 50 bucks

I have one from my time in the Army. The first real test it got was in Ft Erwin Ca. in the mountains in the winter. It was so cold the coyotes would come in the tents at night to get a little warmth. We had no heat just the tents to knock the gale force winds down. That system is awesome. I don't use it much anymore unless I go camping. If I have the opertunity to hunt some remote area or am traveling long distance alone I do carry it just in case. The compression system is nice.

Check out the SF version and one person tent! Can you link what you are talking about please? I'll try Checked eBay on regular 2 or 3 complete sets on bid for less than 100$. I've been keeping an eye on this type of gear lately. Putting my boys a survival kit together. Hope to start taking them out this next year.

My experiences with the mss bags have not been warm when it is cold out. They also loose loft fairly quickly and I think there are much better options. The gortex bivy sack has been good, thou. You can weave a light plastic rod thru the hood to keep it off your face...
The bags have no draft collar to keep the cold air from coming in around your head....the quick out zipper was the best feature.

Hmm, I checked out the blog, I still don't really get it, the bags I saw didn't impress me too much.
Marty touched on a couple of good points; a warm sleeping bags has lots of loft and retains it, a good bag also has a draft collar as well as a hood with a draw string that leave nothing exposed except your face (nose and mouth), as well as a good draft baffle tube extending the entire way down the zipper (on the inside of the bag). Nearly as important as the bag is a good pad under the bag.
I spend several weeks in the course of a year outside in a sleeping bag during the spring, fall and winter. Of course one of the most important ways to stay warm is to keep your bag dry. Never pull it over your head and breathe inside the bag, and on extended trips take the bag out of the tent on good weather days, unzip it and drape it over some brush to air it out, and dry out condensation that has been accumulating.
