Thinking of buying a new saw. My old one is a 20 inch bar mccullah. Stihl? husqavarna? Or are there a bunch of emissions crap on new ones and not worth having? I will go with a 18 or 20 inch bar.

Do you work on them yourself? Where can you get spare parts easy? Those two answers to the question are more importAnt than the color of the saw
If you have a Stihl dealer nearer than a husky one go with them and visa versa
I ended up with both makes and built a Chinese Stihl clone and they all do what they need to

I run saws for a living. Stihl, Husky and Echo are all good saws at this point. What price point are you looking at? My personal favorite saws right now are Stihl 461, it is around $1,000 dollar saw though.

I have used Jonsereds and recently a Echo, 590 model I believe. My brother has always used Husky, 371 and 372 models. Probably over kill for fire wood, but we also logged. The Echo cuts much better than I expected. I had always used 70 to 85cc saws. But for the average wood cutter the Echo might be the best deal.

Makita took over Dolmar and they make good saws at a reasonable price if you have a dealer near you

What are you going to do with it?
Homo saws suck for real work.
Pro saws are too pricey for homos.

What Mac you have? Starting a retirement home here for the oldsters.

I've run Stihl chainsaws for over 40 years. I have an old 041 Super (20" guide bar) and it's replacement, a Stihl 440 Magnum (20" guide bar) and my all time favorite, a Stihl 026 PRO (16" guide bar).

don't shop saws, shop dealers

if by chance you find more than one great dealer in your area with good hours and prices then shop saws.

if you plan to use it more than once go farm/ranch grade or better

Husquavarna
Stihl
Dolmar / makita
Jonsered / redmax
echo

I drive past a hardware store Stihl dealer 3/4 of a mile from my house to get to My Jonsered dealer 1 1/2 miles from my house.

I used to have a stihl , when I had to look up the part number in their book to have them order it and then got the privilege of paying full msrp , so I could have it next week, want service drop off your saw and might get it back next week they have a tech 2 days a week part time.

the Jonsered dealer generally has whatever I need , his prices are good and 5% discount for paying cash. works 6 days a week more than full time owner of the shop is there 98% of the time when he isn't the retired previous owner of the shop watches the shop.

I have 2 Jreds now sold my Stihl for parts

one more very important piece of advice displacement in CC of a saw divide by 3 equials bar length

55cc saw / 3 = 18.33 inches I put an 18 inch bar on it

72cc saw /3 = 24 inch bar , I do have a 28 for occasional felling

if your going to bury the bar in wood and keep it there cut after cut after cut for a tank of gas over and over follow the the divide by 3 or greater rule and be happy and make lots of wood

Husqvarna is running a deal right now with new gas powered equipment if you buy 3 qts of pre mixed fuel or 6 little bottles of bar oil you get extended warranty.
I just bought a husqvarna 435 this weekend. Unfortunately TCS was out of both fuel and oil so I need to check with husqvarna to see what they say about extended warranty. I have stihl husqvarna dolmar, jonsered (husqvarna owns them) dealers near me.
I'm excited to try it out. I've been needing one for a few years and the timing was right. + I went to my godparents and my god dad was trying to get his 4 saws in running condition. I plan on getting him a load this weekend if I'm feeling somewhat decent. He's slowing down so he needs the help.

I did consider stihl in the same price range and stihl had at least 10 cc smaller engine

461 is discontinued....

The 462 replaced the 441 and the 461. We ordered a 441 for a customer last week - stihl had less than five available. I'm not sure on the 461, but I'm sure numbers are down.

I spent some time these last days cutting dry oak and ended up using the 661 most of the time as it had the grunt to do it with a 25 bar but tried a n the larger trees

I just cut firewood for my garage and some for my dad. I can work on my own saws. As far as dealers, Ace hardware sells the stihls and tractor supply sells husky. Neither work on them. I want to stay around $400, im going to look for a smaller business to buy from. Was thinking the farm boss 20 inch bar. The mac is an old 610, bought it for $75 used about 15 years ago. Needs a new bar and pull cord. Will use it for a backup.

I think the 450 rancher should meet your needs then in that general price range anyway

Look at the stihl 261 and see if it’s not exactly what you’re looking for. I’ve ran it 12 months a year for the last 2 years in all conditions and it’s been flawless.

If the bottom is still good polish the jug and put a new piston/rings in it and a gasket and go another 20 years!
