I decided to try out some Berkshire disposable stakes for coyote sets this year instead of cross-staked rebar like I have normally used. I quickly learned how difficult they can be to remove! Now I know why they call them "disposable" stakes.
But, I think I discovered a pretty good way to pull them out. I took the point of a pick mattock and put it into the loop at the upper end of the cable stake. Then I could just pull back on the handle like a lever and stake came right out. It did bend the anchor plate but I can easily pound that back straight.
I don't think I want to carry a pick mattock on a walking line so I may use the cable stakes only in areas where I can drive the truck right up close to the set.

I use the same method. seems to work fairly well when pulling. I do however put the point in a quickink that is tight rather than just in the cable loop itself. In my head i think it kinks the cable too much on the corners of the pick. (mine has fairly sharp corners as the point is really square just back from the tip.

Your friend must be Andre the Giant, huh? he aint small - likely the handle wasn't the best, it was a newer generic wood handle

watch it - you get one of them in good in frozen ground and you can break a wooden handle - a friend told me that must have been ranger's friend that broke my pick handle doing the same thing. getting all my traps changed to super stakes with chain, and a buddy made me a killer stake puller
