I'm hearing that there is a law to coming down the pipeline that will make it illegal for any medication to be sold over counter. As in you have to hire a vet to come out and treat your dog for fleas type law.

So no more being able to treat for mites, worms, or anything else on your own!

Any substance to this rumor?

Not positive, but I believe this is going to be for mostly antibiotics.

Overuse = immunity

I know they have made LA200 antibiotic to where you have to have a prescription. Even if you get it mixed in with mineral. You have to show the prescription at the feed store. It's an antibiotic.

It is what it is.

That's been the law for most states regarding Rabies and other types of shots for some years now.

It might be good to narrow what you are asking for or what products etc. There are currently several drugs that can only be sold by licensed veterinarians for livestock but there are hundreds of what you are classifying as "medications" that farmers and animal owners can and do buy over the counter. Also states can have their own regs in addition to the federal.

Law was already passed last year for livestock antibiotics. Haven’t heard anything about wormers being next, some one may have got their info messed up.

I'm under the impression that it will be any and all medication. What ever that means I don't know.

I also know a dog isn't livestock! But if the is true? Pets will also be regulated to the hilt.

Could just be antibiotics?

I'm aware of different things being vet only as well and different states having different laws etc...

I'm being told this is new and will hit all medication?

I'm looking heree in hopes that someone will disprove this s rumor. Because I can't find any wording on it.

First, one needs to clarify ; what laws, for what drugs, what animal classification(s). Dogs (and other similar pets) are not considered agricultural livestock.
Some drugs are not over the counter, restricted use, etc. These would require a licensed veternarian.

The American Veterinary Association bought politicians to steal money from Americans who raise animals of all sorts. Most of the medication that now needs a prescription has been used for many years, without significant problems. It's just another example of people being screwed out of their money by politicians owned by special interests.

Doxycycline can no longer be bought without a prescription for your dog or yourself, HOWEVER, if your fish is sick, you can order it online without a prescription.
My "fish" no longer have lymes.

Im pretty sure i can still buy la200 over the counter, i know i bought some at least last year. Lots of things were taken off the shelf though.

I dont like more regulations...BUT overuse of the same wormers have made some parasites immune to most of them. For me keeping barber pole worms in check in my goats has been very hard. Ive tried everything and for now it seems regular ol ivermectin works the best even though in lots of places in the country they are nearly immune to it. I rotate ivermectin and cydectin oral sheep drench with them for worms and use copper bolus to help.

Lots of the over the counter dog and cat wormers and flea pills are nearly useless. Especially for tapeworms i bet we used 100 bucks worth of over the counter stuff and it had no effect. One trip to the vet and one pill and it knocked them completely out.

Besides maintenance worming of my goats i just go to the vet and get meds that work the first time.

I use ivomec as well. This is what sparked this thread. I was told this will soon be regulated! Then I asked why and was told everything will be. As in you won't be able to buy anything labeled as medicine without a prescription from vet.

I'll take all my animals to court house and leave them there!

I heard the same thing that they were taking all the meds off the shelf. They have taken some things off the shelf here. I heard about this rumor well over a year ago though. SO far the i havent noticed them taking the regular stuff they always have off the shelf yet. If they do then whatever i guess. I have a good vet so i can get what i need from him.

I do love it when the gobermint tells me whats best for me. Makes my life alot easier. Speaking of...i need to go check and see what deals palmetto state has on right now....

You can no linger buy Di Methox, aka Sulphamethadioxine and some of the other antibiotics without a prescription.
