Hey guys, I’ve had coyotes walk past my sets before, but have never had this happen. This was a flat set with a corn cob with coyote gland and urine. A coyote missed the pan by a couple inches, but it doesn’t look like he stopped to sniff it or even slow down. I would have figured he would have at least broke stride, but he just walked over top of it. It did get down to single digits last night, so I’m wondering if he had trouble smelling it. What would you do in this situation? Thanks!

I would leave it alone. The dog smelled it, just wasn't interested. He'll probably be back.

If he walked that close and didn't break stride I'd start questioning the lure.

If he walked that close and didn't break stride I'd start questioning the lure. Could it be that instead of questioning the lure, it could be that that particular lure wasn't interesting to that particular coyote? For instance some people love cilantro. Others hate it and think it tastes like soap. I know individual animals are like that as well. I had a coyote pass up a curiosity lure but the next day I caught a coyote in that same set. Or it very well could be the lure. Hard to say for sure.

Yeah that is a good point. A smell (whether interesting to them or not) should at least get their attention and cause them to stop and think about it.

Snow is very humbling. I had a coyote walk up between 2 sets that are about 15 feet apart then turn and walk away. Both sets had caught fox two days ago. It had snowed right after the remake so it wasn't the sight of the catch circle. It sure but maybe he just didn't like venison or horse meat. I figure a dumb one will come alone soon enough.
Wish I had more time to trap....

Very frustrating, but if we caught every dog that left tracks it would not be a challenge. Ive had this same thing happen last few days also after couple inches of snow, tracks right by two sets close. I put cat urine on one and different gland on other and caught one that i put cat urine on.

Ah, the mystery of coyote trapping. That's why it's usually better to multi-set these boogers. 2 3 is better 4 for a hot spot 5 for when all roads lead there

Ah, the mystery of coyote trapping. That's why it's usually better to multi-set these boogers. 2 3 is better 4 for a hot spot 5 for when all roads lead there I must agree, I have only 3 locations set with a total of 10 traps out. Rifle deer season opens tomorrow bso the next couple weeks that is all I will run. Seems deer hunters get some sort of satisfaction out of mutilating a coyote that is in my trap then leave it there. If it weren't illegal I would walk around In a blaze orange suit and visit every Hunter I saw. Might even take a seat and sit next to them.lol
Wish I had more time to trap....

strike2x Ah yes. Growing up the first 45 years of my life trapping Michigan I well remember folks "borrowing" my traps and not bringing them back! I trapped near Seney in the UP and theft wasn't too bad on that public ground. I trapped private ground near Hillman, Alpena and it was not bad either but down and around Fenton where I grew up and trapped in several counties, Genesee, Livingston, Shiawassee, and Lapeer... I only had private farms (about 70 of them) and it was rugged most years. I need to go back and knock on some doors and which of those old farmers is still among the living here on earth? Great folks. Miss 'em.

Which way was wind blowing? Given if they smell it you should see some reaction in the change in stride of print pattern. A leap back or aside if it spooks them, a stop with extra step or two if it caught their attention. If they generally like it will step all over that set to investigate. Sometimes if windy and they are moving quickly the go right on by and didnt get a whiff evidently. Be patient. Also make sure the trap isnt crusted over and will fire with confidence. Here freeze thaw can put them out of commission fast and that gets frustration with out good freeze proof bedding. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
