I got a husqvarna rancher and it's been a good saw so far I run a 20" bar. It will flat out cut some wood that's for sure.

for a basic fire wood saw the Husky 445 rancher with an 18 inch bar sure makes fire wood well 3/8 .058 chisel or semi chisel.

I have it in the Red case AKA Jonsered 2255 run in about 4 years now.

hard to beat for the price.

In the $400 price range I'd consider the 455 Rancher. Has a few more HP than the 450 and a little bigger bite to the blade. I heat my house and shop with wood all winter up here and have not had one issue with my 455 in 14 years now ( I did buy a spare last year just in case, though).

I went with the Husky for the reason's stated above: There was a service center and dealer nearby....but I haven't used them, yet.

Homo saw was my dumb attempt at internet short hand for home owner saw, I'll stop that mow lol.
I have 2 of the 610s I'd part with.
After running the 610 (good saw in its day imo) you will like the light weight high rev of modern saw of same cc.

I know an arborist. He's used Stihl, Husqvarna and Echo. He prefers the Husky out of them all. His favorite model is the 460 Rancher.

I have had 4 Stihl chainsaws three years ago I bought a Echo it has never been tuned up it starts on three pulls or less I never hardly ever got a Stihl to start on three pulls. And when I would take it for repair the model I had would be hard to find parts for.

the Echo saws are very often too lean from the factory, every saw should be tuned at your altitude and the temp you most commonly run it. a good reason to have areal dealer and not a hardware store if you don't tune your own saw.

Best advice so far.

I run Huskies. I'm lucky that I have dealer close by that keeps parts, and supplies on hand.
They are a small engine shop.
They have a tech that is there all the time that really knows the saws.
He knows the quirks and the common issues, he knows the parts by memory.

My local Stihl dealer is a tractor dealer first, a saw seller as a side line.
Ask him a question about saws and he has to dig out the Stihl catalog.

Dealer is more important the color of the saw.

You guys talking about being close to dealers, how often do you go to them? Get the saw, a sprocket, a pack of files, an extra chain and extra bar, six pack of mix and you should be good for a while. Sounds like whatever brand you are using needs "looked" after too much.

it isn't that the saw needs looking after it is that when it does , it is never a convenient time to dive an hour each way or wait a week + for your saw back or a part to get ordered.

add extra bar nuts to your list , I went 12 years without needing one and then I lost 2 in a day

but when you need a fuel filter , plug and air filter they don't hand you the book and say here show me what you want me to order.

I needed a dealer a lot more with my Stihl than I have with either Jred

I am not opposed to driving farther for a good dealer who does the work and starts the saw and tunes it before it leaves the shop this first time

if you have a tach and tune your own saw , order parts online , go for it , in that case just don't buy a Stihl they don't sell most of their parts online.

I just figured anyone serious about cutting wood and if it was their livelihood would have more than one saw at their disposal. I carried up to 4 on me, a new one, a newer one, a decent one and a carcuss one- all the same model. I did most all of my own repairs and the dealer was for mix, files and what not. A saw shop was never close to me when I was working, and that's when the problems accured, not at home.

I forgot to put an air filter back in after cleaning it. Couple days later I take the top off to clean it again- seen it was missing, my heart sunk. Wasn't much longer after that, it blew up. Costly mistake.
newtoga, let me guess, an 090 or Contra?

if by chance you find more than one great dealer in your area with good hours and prices then shop saws.

if you plan to use it more than once go farm/ranch grade or better

Husquavarna
Stihl
Dolmar / makita
Jonsered / redmax
echo

I drive past a hardware store Stihl dealer 3/4 of a mile from my house to get to My Jonsered dealer 1 1/2 miles from my house.

I used to have a stihl , when I had to look up the part number in their book to have them order it and then got the privilege of paying full msrp , so I could have it next week, want service drop off your saw and might get it back next week they have a tech 2 days a week part time.

the Jonsered dealer generally has whatever I need , his prices are good and 5% discount for paying cash. works 6 days a week more than full time owner of the shop is there 98% of the time when he isn't the retired previous owner of the shop watches the shop.

I have 2 Jreds now sold my Stihl for parts

one more very important piece of advice displacement in CC of a saw divide by 3 equials bar length

55cc saw / 3 = 18.33 inches I put an 18 inch bar on it

72cc saw /3 = 24 inch bar , I do have a 28 for occasional felling

if your going to bury the bar in wood and keep it there cut after cut after cut for a tank of gas over and over follow the the divide by 3 or greater rule and be happy and make lots of wood

Good Advice,Pete.

I bit the bullet two years ago and bought the same saw........I have no regrets.

if it was their lively-hood they would have 3+ saws and one always a new one

if they cut 5 cord of firewood a year one saw is maybe all they own then a dealer gets more important to them.

I would think the saw should never see a shop cutting that little amount of wood. You wouldn't need much from a dealer that's for sure.

It depends on the specie and age of the wood being cut. Our friend is a Stihl dealer so that's what we use. I think there is a huge difference between the homeowner saw and the pro model. This discussion has been hashed out on other threads so it maybe time to move on. Buy your bar and chain oil from rural King, you can buy Stihl brand or store brand.
