picked up a Lymans flintlock great plains rifle in good shape except that someone painted the barrel and all the metal work (looks like spray-paint) which is beginning to peel in spots and I would like to remove the paint, the barrel under the paint it browned not blued anyone know if I just use paint remover if it will take of the browning as well
not that it would be that hard to re brown it but would rather not if I don't have to

it was only 75 bucks at the local pawn shop so I don't have much into it and the bore looks like it was never used except for the cruddy paint job

Re-browing is very simple to do so I wouldn't worry if any of the browning comes off when removing the paint. Browning is simply allowing the barrel to rust, then oiling it to stop the process.

The process of browning is applying a chemical to force it to rust faster, then it's rubbed down with an oily rag to kill the process and to protect it. You don't want to apply anything that would dissolve and remove the oil. I'm surprised the paint stuck at all.

the browning is not going to be hurt by using a solvent to remove the paint. Simply re-oil the barrel when done. I have browned barrels that I have wiped down with all sorts of oils and solvents. You got a whale of a deal on that rifle.
