That’s a great question! Experience in an area has a lot to do with my sets. I look at lots of things. Where snow might drift and be a problem, wind direction, traffic, etc.. Sometimes I’m wrong, but as the years go it’s like reading a book. I fell like I struggle in a new areas, and have to slow myself down and think about what the critters are thinking and where they are going. I have a bad habit of using the same sets that produced in years past in areas I’ve trapped before. If I’m in a new area I’m more likely to try something different!! Human nature and confidence has a lot to do with that. Good luck hope you nail them.

I have a vast area of land that i trap, i find myself looking for the perfect spot and will drive and look and drive and look. Ive made a honest attempt of finding a high traffic area this year and stopping getting out and making a set or a few in that area. What makes a perfect spot in my mind, may not be the perfect spot for a yote. Im off to a good start this year doing this. Had a old trapper tell me “steel on the ground will catch more than steel in the pickup”, he is right. Some of the sets I was sure were my best have not produced yet, and others i was not sold on have.

I should have read your question better before I replied, according to my wife i dont listen either sooo...
Type of set is determined by the area i select mostly, cow trails ( coyote highways ), fencelines, big rock backing, steep dirt banks, soil type, backing options. I snare and lay steel so some instances i also deem snare effective on trails leading to a foothold also, that has different things i need also like brush or grass not grazed off. I have my favorite set but mix it up cause i deal with a few educated coyotes that are a little wary of a dirthole set.

Experience has shown me that dirt holes sets and variations of them catch more canines than any other type of set. I've tried many, many different sets , still do like to fool around with different types but the dirt-hole is my go to set.
Eh...wot?
