forget the cat , it only leads to domestic troubles. I am still putting up with far too many of them.
is that a Rem 742 on the left?
Sure looks like it...a classic and on my "to get" list someday. Lol seen it before the cat.
get the 760 instead.or get the 308
I bought my 742 when I was 14 , it is a 1966 in 30-06.
the bolt over rotates and cuts into the rails near the rear of the receiver even with some factory 150gr ammo. the gas system isn't regulated for slow slow powders or hot loads.
once the bolt eats into the receiver they jam , they can be stoned a few times , but the bolt lugs are also getting battered, not good.
I think I have found a load , an M1 Garand load that I think will extend the life of the rifle. that and good cleaning and lube I hope to get a bunch more life out of mine.
Remington made such nice handling quick pointing deer gun , and then didn't build the internals to take much more than 20 rounds a year for 20 years , average deer hunter. when Rem realized the issues they discontinued the rifle and stopped selling parts for it. out came the 7400 which was better. until they made the 750
I have heard no complaints about the 308 742 , battering the receiver I suspect that there just isn't enough room in the case to get the bolt to batter the receiver like the 30-06 does.
the M1 Garand load and my 308 load are the same bullet at the nearly the same velocity the M1 load takes 1 1/2 grains more powder to compensate for the larger case, the M1 re-barreled in 308 can use factory ammo also.
