Thanks for sharing. That guy is funny. It is quite similar to getting directions in Maine except the directions here are not as detailed up here.

Same thing in the U.P. of Michigan. Only they may just look at you and walk away.

Sitting in a bar in LaValle, Wi, town of about 200 folks and about 10 miles from my home. Milbaurer's bar I think it was called then and Wentz and his son Snowy were tending bar and cooking burgers. There is a lake near there and many folks from Chicago and other points south own summer - vacation homes there. A group of 4 younger people came in and ordered beers, burgers and directions. After some thought Wentz says, o ya, I know where that is... ya turn left from here and go across the tracks and up the hill to almost the top where you need to shift down to first gear to make it unless you have a new car, then turn left at Lefty Kramers barn, it is right along the road and used to be red, about a mile or two you will drop down into the valley ang go across a little bridge, that is Big Crick which is dammed up to make the lake you are trying to get to. Now after that, they have built so many Goldarned roads in there that I can't help ya anymore. This was in the days prior to gps and cell phones and one of the gals wrote all the directions down and her boyfriend wanted to pay the bill. Ol Wentz gave him the bill and the guy says, I am sorry sir, but I wanted to pay for all 4 of us. Wentz says, you just did, but I can charge you more if it will make you feel better.

True story, nephew was doing fill in delivery on UPS truck for the holidays. Part of the directions he got for one stop was “turn just past where cow is grazing along side the road”

Same tavern, I used to stop in there a bit when I was a young ner-do-well and pay my price to learn the finer points of playing Sheepshead with the local farmers who had told their wives they had to run into the feedmill for an emergency ration of something or another. Early October, must have been in the late 70's early 80's and it had been a showcase year for crops. Plenty, but not too much rain, good drying weather for hay, etc. Prices for crops and milk were good and I thought no one could possibly play the "can't make any money farming" card. I expressed my enthusiasm at the table when one grizzled old guy looked me in the eye and said "Christ, did this year take a lot out of the soil."
