For years, we've saved freezer paper and re-used it the following year. I was packaging elk sausage today and ran across this paper. They usually only last 4-5 years, but this particular paper had a history.

[Linked Image]

2009 - Perch fillets
2010 - Venison tongue
2011 - Channel catfish
2012 - Chard
2013 - Blue grouse
2014 - Beaver backstrap
2015 - Elk roundsteak
2016 - (nothing, so must have left the round steak in the freezer 2 years)
2017 - Chukar breast
2018 - Broccoli
2019 - (not labeled, but it was used for Elk sausage).

Thought some of you may get a chuckle out of the photo.

Jack

I am thrifty, but I would not think that would be sanitary.

Sanitary ??? You should see Jack's freezer. You would think you just walked into the coroner's lab!

I suspect Miss Lisa has a separate freezer for food.

What's wrong with the coroner's lab? We wipe things down after every case! Lol ....
sorry don't think I would reuse freezer paper either. But of course he didn't say, he may have wrapped with clear plastic first.
You do make a neat wrap could use that talent as a second business this year

Well I don't recall the bio-hazard stickers but there are multiple stainless steel drawers. Inside each one are hundreds of critters ... each drawer is full of the same species. Each critter has a toe tag that says either................Microtus xanthognathus or Peromyscus maniculatus........or Zapus hudsonious etc etc.

Also on the tiny toe tag is the creature's weight in micrograms and it's length expressed as a quantum proportion of a parsec.

I have watched Jack measure and weigh hundreds of these things before breakfast. A digital post scale sensitive enough to weigh a popcorn fart and tiny, tiny calipers to measure rate of growth on each toenail. I even saw him timing some of these critters as they ran through the grass near the spring. He took copious notes and measurements and transcribed them in millimeters per second and then converted them to furlongs per fortnight.

Gotta keep good data ya know !!

Miss Lisa does make a dynamite lynx pizza. Just keep your eyes peeled to see which freezer she is getting the ingredients from !

its one thing to be thrifty... if i wrapped a steak in used freezer paper id have to wonder if it was contaminated....to each their own... but ill use new freezer wraps.. its not like its expensive...i like to think im a professional at my trade and i can afford to live with a few perks.... like new sandwich baggies... have you figured your like long savings?? maybe 20 bucks spread out over 20 - 30 years.... this rate right up with the stupidest idea i ever heard of.....

Don't forget that freight into my place is $1.05 per pound. It all adds up

That Xmas cake is soaked in some 12 year old Scotch and it only improves with time and the aging process.

I'm surprised that they are not double lined body bags that are used for meat preservation.
Watch those Zapus...cause they are real Jumping mices. And we can thank a early explorer/ preparator in collecting specimens, his claim was; Hudson river, Hudson Bay, red squirrel and meadow jumping mouse.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without......One of my favorite sayings.
I wish more folks reused stuff like this.....That said, I can't convince my wife to reuse freezer paper. She's pretty good about most everything else.

We have 7 freezers. 4 are "science" freezers and 3 are food. It is NOT easy to forget which one is which.

Putting meat or produce in heavy-gauge ziplock freezer bags, then wrapping in re-used freezer paper is indeed quite sanitary, and will keep even burger for at least 5 years with zero freezer burn. We tried the shrink-wrap bags, and because of the expense and the fact that 2 years in the freezer resulted in minor freezer-burn, we went back to the freezer paper. Also, we do volume, so indeed, freezer paper is expensive. We have a local butcher order the thirty-pound rolls of butcher paper, and I think last time we ordered a roll, it was about $80. That was 10 years ago.

And yes, how many of you know the f-squared (furlongs per fortnight) of the s-squared (scoot speed) of Microtus xanthognathus through Chrysothamnus nauseosus? These are robust data needed to accurately determine the rate of dispersal of Martes americana (which are apical predators of M. xanthognathus), thus one can figure the optimum distribution of traps to increase annual harvests.

Jack

It is indeed true talent to take complete BS and put it to practical use ! Well...............almost complete BS. Many a truth is told in jest !

Northof50: Would that explorer be Henry Hudson ? I thought he invented a car ?? Wait...........wasn't he the one who had part ownership in a sailing vessel called the Half Mine ??

I thought Hudson invented some sort of stinging insect. Wasn't it the hornet?

(Interesting where some of these threads go...)
