little backstory...South Central PA. Small farm. Fox eating chickens. Have the red fox on trail cam around 7 to 9pm and around midnight at times. I set two traps 1 1/2 pan spring traps. Used fox gland. Followed all advice minus using wax. No luck after 6 days . How long should I wait before I say .. maybe I left my scent? Maybe I out in bad location?? Maybe too much lure? Another route I was thinking about.... I have a decoy with foxpro. No red light yet tho. Was hoping traps got em. Any advice? This is my first time trapping. I feel like I was really good at setting em at least. I used Pete moss with pan cover to prevent freezing too. I can add info as any suggestions are made.. thanks for taking time to help. Josh..

They can be hard for a new trapper to catch in foot traps. Might I suggest you back track and look for a narrow place on his trail coming or going, walk in on the side of the trail, and hang a snare with a loop about 5 inches, about 4 inches above the ground, use a few small guide sticks where needed.

Good luck.

They like chicken, put chicken in a dirt hole.

And CRs are not legal until day after Christmas

Thought about baiting. I have a lot of other animals that would prob get it first . Was trying to avoid them. I guess I might revert to that here in a week or two if the lure doesn't work. I haven't been walking up to the traps because heard that will spook em. I drive atv daily close enough to see if there is anything.

So. Back to my original question. Just clarifying. How long can a trap set before I would have to redo the scent or move it. Has someone let a trap for weeks? Month?

I have a close to home spot that caught three fox and some coon last year. I had it set from I think, early November to late January, for the most part. It just depends.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

My first fox was caught in a set, the only set I made because I decided to try to catch one, that I made in late November and on Christmas day I was tired of walking to an empty trap so I was going to pull it and there he was. That is the fox in my avatar. I added lure twice in that time.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Thanks for all help, and encouragement. Less than a week in so I'll just be patient and see how this goes for a bit. I have trailcams out so at least see how he responds. Keep the advice coming if there is anymore. Send me any links to YouTube that one of you may feel beneficial to me. Or books that you rely on. Thanks. I will also look through this site for some.

Stop by your local grocery store and get a barbecue chicken for dinner. Then throw some of the scraps in a dirt hole.

How Close is the trap to the to your Hole?
I'd check the trap pattern to see if there is any foot prints, Trap could be froze down from moisture freeze thaw or other reasons.

I know. I was paranoid that the spring tension wouldn't release when fox stepped on it. I set pan so it was right near where it only took a mm or so to spring it. It's not set completely if you know what I mean.

Pa,
Patients is good. Also trap bedding is very important it can not move at all no matter where you push on it. That probably the second most important thing. Location is number one. If you are on location you will catch fox. Find tracks, crap, trails or some sign of where they are traveling. Probably close to cover.
