Picked up a hitch-hiker. Seemed like a nice guy. After a few miles, he asked me if I wasn't afraid that he might be a serial killer? I told him that the odds of two serial killers being in the same car at the same time was extremely unlikely.
We are told not to judge all Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but are told to judge all gunowners by the actions of a few.

TRUE STORY >>>> A friend of my dad's, a red faced Irishman … Was coming back form fishing one day... It was raining really hard and he saw a guy hitch-hiking. Tommy felt a little sorry for the guy even though he looked a little scurvy. After he got in the car and they started down the road he began to notice how bad the guy smelled. He told my dad He had to get the guy out of the car before puked up his lunch. So. he turned to the guy and asked him if he had a gun on his person. The guy relied, no why? Tommy said, good, because I do. And he patted his chest like he had a shoulder holster. Just down the road in front of them was gas station …. He turned to Tommy and said, you can let me off right there at the station, which he did. Tommy told my dad he had to drive about 10 miles on down the with the window down to get the stick out of the car.

I live right next to the Appalachian trail and back in the summer this year there was a guy thumbing with his pack on like so many others and I said to myself if he's still there when I come back up from the bank I'll give him a ride to the trail crossing like I do so many. Well he wasn't there when I came thru because a friend of mine had already picked him up. Couple days later his pic was all over the news because he'd been arrested for murdering 3 people and severely wounded another on the trail. You never know who you are picking up. Changed my way of thinking. If they can walk that trail across the country they can walk to the store and back. No more rides from me Remember seeing that all over the local news!

A guy I was in the army with would tell stories of pulling over ahead of a hitch hiker to only speed off when the got close to his truck. I never actually thumbed a ride, but did have a few pick me up walking down the road. I was appreciative!

I will pick up a hitch hiker if I am alone. If I have the wife or kids it's a no. I have high hiked a lot in my cart and appreciated every ride I got. I hiked back from Texas to Michigan one time when I was younger. My car broke down just out of Dallas and it took me about 20 rides and 5 days to get home. I know by the end of that journey I didn't smell to good and looked like a bum. The last ride I got was from Lansing to Houghton Lake which is 2 hours or so. The guy was just going to the store to get smokes. He drove me home and wished me well. That is the way it should be. I am not afraid to help my fellow man. Now helping woman is another thing. I had a lady chase me away with a tire iron when I stopped to ask if she would like help changing a tire. That was in the 80s in California when I was in the Navy. If you are hit going around here I will pick you up.
Wish I had more time to trap....

When I was a youth living in the UP, Late 60's / early 70's. It was a form of entertainment . Tried to see how many times I could hitch hike US41 from Marquette to Escanaba in less than 8 Hrs. Best is 3.5 twice. Never had an issue
Nowadays you look it over closely before you think about stopping. For a valid reason.
