The MN DNR refused to ban the use of lead in bullets and fishing lures. Instead, they decided to turn the issue over to the legislature. I guess they've been getting enough heat from MN sportsmen.

So they're just passing the blame? What are the chances the legislature passes a lead ban (possibly even at the request of the DNR)? In answer to your second question: Very high with the DNR's coaching.

Sounds like a publicity stunt. Now they'll be able to say they didnt do it, they're just enforcing laws set by the legislature.
Sorry to hear that. Better stock up on copper ammo before the prices skyrocket. Gonna be a major pain for non-residents coming to fish MN. I'm sure you're right in saying they had nothing to do with it and put the blame on the legislature. With the no common sense, liberal tree huggers in MN's legislature, they'll probably pass it. I can go along with steel shot for waterfowl, but lead in bullets is ridiculous.

You can bet your Butt, the legislature will vote for a ban. Tom Sadly, no one will be able to hunt with Grandpa's rifle if that happens. I very seriously doubt they will make copper ammo for the old and odd calibers.
I have nothing clever to put here.

You can bet your Butt, the legislature will vote for a ban. Tom Agreed. The people who run this state can't turn it into California fast enough. It's embarrassing. Remember, there are states where the legislature has no power over wildlife laws. How nice would that be (assuming the people who ran your DNR weren't braindead).

The sky is falling better ban lead. Read an article where audubon is claiming loons may be heading for extinction. Meanwhile they are everywhere with no indication they are in decline. The raptor center is seeing record numbers of sick and injured eagles and is not sure why. Fact is there are record numbers of eagles out there so of course there would be a higher number of sick and injured. Oh, and the latest study on US Bank Stadium (the reported death trap for song birds) estimated 111 birds were killed bouncing off the windows this year. I'd guess that many choked on bird seed yesterday. Better ban windows too. Two feral cats probably kill that many in a week.

I'd guess that many choked on bird seed yesterday. Better ban windows too. Every lake I fished this year; there were loons present. If there's sick eagles it has to be from eating ducks that had lead pellets in them. Oh, that's right hunters don't use lead shot for waterfowl anymore. The duck must have ingested it when it was diving in the mud. In reality, I've never seen so many eagles as there are now. It used to be rare to even see one eagle. More birds are killed by the wind turbines than anything. Of course, you won't hear about that fact from the "Go Greenie Nuts"..

I was told of the wind turbines that all they do is keep a record of what is killed and move on. They care less otherwise. Also I seen too many bald eagles on the back waters of the Miss. River and around where I live here in northeast Iowa. I know where there is 4 eagles nest is right now and they are active when in season and that is not far from me. Also they are a pain on my trapping take sometimes what is caught in the trap apart.

It’s going to take years of study, but in the end, it will probably look like Type E botulism, which is found in fish guts, has finally crossed over from fish to fish-eating birds. And to make matters more complicated, the immunity enjoyed by birds for centuries, has been lowered by some man made toxin, like the neo-whatever and glyphosate-whatever herbicides that have washed downstream being picked up by fish, that are eventually eaten by loons and eagles. It’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. But I’ve seen these sorts of investigations before. Unfortunately, everybody initially goes for the low-hanging fruit (something they think they know) meanIng lead, and will try to ban that first.

MN dnr just started allowing 223 this year it looks like. other than 223 I almost never see a rifle bullet stay in a deer. so not been a big issue in the past. never had a 30-06 that wasn't a pass through. most 12ga slugs unless shot end to end were a pass-through. if they were shot end to end the deer was recovered so no lead was left the idea that large amounts of lead were being left in undercover deer carcass or gut piles is weak. it is a heck of a lot more likely that pheasant shot with 7 1/2 have a hide full of lead pellets and then are eaten by raptors.
I agree I have not seen so many raptors as in the last 10 years , I have seen more eagles in the last ten than the previous 30 and they are sometimes right in town now. used to be something rare to see an eagle now it is getting sort of common. hawks on a clear day drive 5 miles and probably see 3 hawks turkey vultures we never even had when I was a kid and now they fill the sky above town several times a year with a dozen or more of them the land in the tree next to my drive way.
