I have been trying out some pipe dream sets the past 2 weeks but I’ve been having some trouble with finding the trap snapped. First year trying to trap with foot traps like this but as far as I can tell I’m doing it properly. I dig the hole about 7-8 inches back from the pipe, pound in the ground for my levers(Bridger 3 dogless), set the trap in the hole with steel screen pan cover, then i pound the sides around the trap and when I press on all 4 corners it doesn’t rock. Then I sprinkle some ground brome over top if the set and around the nearby area. Been using wool as a lure holder and mostly gusto and gh11 as lures with a Hiawatha valley bait. I’ve caught a coon or two in sets like this and plenty of skunks but no coyotes. I’ve had numerous times where the trap is set off and the jaws just caught the ground brome. Any ideas as to what I’m doing wrong?

Sounds like you are doing it right. Where are you placing the Gusto and GHII? Maybe try smearing a tad 5' upwind of the pipe. They might be digging for the lure if you are putting it at the pipe.

Gusto and GHII are loud lures. I put a dab of gland at the very bottom of the pipe, on the grass.

Snapped and pulled from the bed or snapped in place?

I’ve been smearing the lures on the sheep wool and stuffing it in the pipe 8 inches in front of trap. They are snapped and pulled out of the bed, but not really any disturbance around the set than that.

The original pipe set uses bait in the pipe. Zag has written on here many times. you want something the coyote wants to get out of the pipe. I've caught several using bobcat bait in the pipe. I would think any good grab and pull bait would work. Caught some last year on Derrick's 1080.

Snapped and pulled from bed with no other disturbance sound more like deer than anything. I use venison or beaver meat in the pipe. The idea is a good not a lure to get the coyote to stay and try to get the pipe out. They will step on the trap and be caught before they get the pipe out. [Linked Image]
You can see the pipe between his feet. This is a very big adult male. This set works.

Wish I had more time to trap....

So it’s not like I’m sitting on deer trails, so how do I fix the deer problems?

Are you using any urine? If I use fox urine around 10 traps I’ll have 10 tripped traps the next morning. Got trail cam pics of them doing it. I hate deer when trapping!

On some sets I’ll squirt some coyote urine on the backing, but those weren’t the only ones set off. Planning on setting up some trail cams this weekend in the sets and find out for sure.

Coyote and bobcat urine doesn’t draw them like fox does down here. But deer are naturally curious so any foreign smell gets checked out. Some just draw them in more than others. When I first started I thought I was doing something wrong...just turned out that deer were checking my sets out before critters were.

I caught my first ever coyote just last week on a pipe dream. I set a little closer than 8 inches. I had several of them set on our deer lease and no snapped traps. I used grass from the set location as I had heard about deer being curious about this set in general. The top of the pipe looks like it was stuck into a garbage disposal. I’m betting deer also. I used it mainly for the deep hole under the trap and the pipe for the bait because it was raining on and off for the few days I had. I also put a little bait on top of the pipe for them to get. When it was explained to me you need to wet their appetites for what’s in the pipe.

Sounds like deer -If you're using salt on your sets, it might be increasing your chances of a deer pull out also.

Deer just walk around, doesn't always take something bto make them come in. If you are on or near a trail and have enough sets out you will have some deer trips.
