In Indiana, 330's are supposed to be set completely underwater. This makes it hard for me to use them effectively in most cases.
330's work great for me when I am able to get them set directly in front of a den opening, but otherwise I have a hard time using them. The crick I am trapping now seems to have a den where the opening is underneath a big sycamore root ball - likely 5 ways into the den with large roots stuck several feet out in front of the entrance and three feet under water. There's no way to get a trap in front of the den entrance there.
The requirement that the trap be completely submerged makes it hard to use them at slides - the water just isn't deep enough in front of the slide and even if I dig out the dirt deep enough to get the trap under water, it's hard to get a beaver to dive under water if they are coming from the water to crawl up the bank. Maybe it's easier if they are coming from land and sliding down into the water. But setting a slide I normally expect to catch them before they get on land anyways.
Not having a boat or being able to walk out on ice, it's hard to get a baited trap set underwater near the feed pile.
On smaller streams I've had some luck fencing down the width of the crick below the dam so that a traveling beaver has to swim through a narrow gap. I can then put a 330 in the gap with a dive stick over the top. But on the crick I'm trapping now, the stream is far to wide to fence it down to a narrow channel like that.
Anyone have ideas on how to use 330's effective completely underwater when you can't find a way to get them right in front of den openings?

I'd sure like to see our state regulations changed to say that 330's only need to be 1/2 or 2/3 under water instead of completely under water. That would make setting them in slides or around dams much more effective while still making it highly unlikely that a land animal would try to swim through it.

Pole it from the side and support it from flopping around seen where some guys weld a bracket and set that on the bottom if you have the water or go out a bit.

I don't see the big deal. Just use a dive stick. That's how I usually set them in runs or den holes anyway. You could look for bottom edge locations too.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Easy to catch them at dam breaks out in the deep water under dive poles.Multiple traps, catch multiple beavers at these sets.Think more traps, less fencing.Good set for extended checks also,as you will still have traps working after a catch or two. Find the runs and just set the trap right on bottom, even in 4 or 5 feet of water they will be moving along the bottom.Use a tall trapstand to get the trap stabilized. Den entrances are a sure fire submerged set. Lured sets can be made with 330's set underwater in the right locations. Dam crossovers can be set with submerged traps at the bottom of the crossover,or the top. After ice up,baited 330's can be set around the feedbed with some success.

There are some states where you can't set near the dam. I still say that the use of the foot hold will get you more beaver than trying to rube Goldberg sets with 330s.

You could look for bottom edge locations too. agreed, the dive stick does NOT have to be at the top of the trap, for whatever reason, they dive and travel along the bottom, when approaching a dive stick even if its a foot above the trap. Sullivan stabilizers are sweet, just make sure to wire them to the opposite spring eye that your extension is attached. You can also stack 2 using an h-stand. Whats stopping you from using footholds blind, making your own slides to trick them?...or at their slides?..or a feedbed set, where YOU make the feedbed?

Well, you can't see ten inches deep in a Midwest farmland creek. Heck, the water is so muddy that you can hardly see if the trap is still set if it is more than 2 inches under the surface. Finding a run under 4' of water ain't gonna happen.
I only have one foothold for beaver and two 330's. So, I'm looking for a way to effectively use all the traps that I have.
Water below the dam is not deep enough to cover 330. I do have a fenced in 330 set in the pond above the dam, hoping a beaver will swim through as it works on dam upkeep. But it seems unlikely a beaver is going to dive through the trap when it would be easier just to go around it.
I've tried putting a 330 under water below a dive stick at the bottom of a slide numerous times. I have to add a great deal of fencing to direct the beaver to dive into the trap when the trap is 2' out from the bank where the water is deep enough to cover the trap. I've never once connected with a 330 set under water near a slide. That set just doesn't work for me.
Boco, do you have any pictures of "dam breaks out in the deep water under dive poles.Multiple traps, catch multiple beavers at these sets.Think more traps, less fencing." I'm having a hard time picturing a 330 set out in the middle of deep water and a beaver just decides to stick his head in it.
I also don't know what a "cross over" is. I assume it is where the beaver goes from the pond above the dam and slides down the dam to get to the stream below the dam. But rarely have I ever been able to find any kind of a trail or sign on the dam to show any one particular trail that the beaver favors to cross from one side of the dam to the other.

That has been my experience also. But I'm trying to find better ways to use body grips. 330's work great for me when I can find a den entrance. But I can't always find the den in muddy water. In this case, I think I know approximately where the den entrance is but there is no way to get to it because of the rootball of the huge sycamore it is under. I have a couple of Bridger OS #3's that I can put on a drowner wire. But, I bought them to use as a dual purpose coyote/beaver trap to supplement my one MB750. I know they are not ideal beaver traps but I may have to bring them out in this case.

Not on purpose but I have caught beaver in 220's.I have caught some big beaver in 220's.So big their head barely fit in the trap.No way could a big beaver get thru a 220,but they put their head in likely thinking it is just sticks that they can bulldoze thru.

Im no beaver trapper but why do you think you have to fence off the whole creek ,set the trap in the middle and a stick or two on each side with a dive stick .Works for me unless somebody has been screwing with them . When the water is muddy I tie a fish bobber on fish line to the jaw on the trap using a piece of duct tape then when its snapped you know ,unless your having excessive water fluctuation
