Ruger Gunsight Scout in .308. That's cheating because it was marketed as an only gun. As others stated you could load .308 as light or heavy with a very wide variety of 30 cal bullets.

I never gave the over under combos much thought. That may not be a bad idea.

I have the same muzzleloading rifle, with a second fast twist barrel for hunting with conicals.

Interesting question posed here. As was pointed out above, this was actually the way it was when the Voyagers were pushing out beyond the frontier and exploring the interior. The smoothbore musket was the most commonly carried flintlock back in the day.

A shotgun is a lot more versatile than a rifle. One of those gorgeous fllinters would work. A guy can knap out a new flint, make blackpowder, even make shot, if somehow it became necessary. I wish some of you would quit putting pictures of firearms on here. I have enough trouble budgeting my money without seeing posts like this.

The over and under 12ga./.223 would be my choice, oh wait I’ve got one . I have the Russian made gun that Remington used to import , they called it the spartan. What it lacks in fit and finish it makes up for in versatility. The gun came with a grooved receiver, so I had to have it drilled and tapped for a set of weaver style bases. I did not go with the see through mounts but wish I had . The gun is a coyote killer which is what I built it for but with the screw in choke tubes and a detachable scope it could be used for many applications .

I read the OP's first two post and thought I made a good choice.
But if they sell ammo on the mountain tops
I'll take the 22 Hornet with open sights

I'm with Nessy... A smoothbore flinter.

My .45 Bedford is a close second... (Hard to get a picture that does it justice)

I have a Savage 22 mag over 20 gauge. That would be my one gun. Funny thing about that being an easy choice, It hasn't been shot it in 15 years!
I have too many other guns, and haven't been in the kind of pinch necessitating the call for the "One Gun" scenario.

Thanks Nessy... I've only got to take her out once. Still trying to find that perfect load.

Mike, that is a classic Bedford county rifle. I used to think that those Bedford "hockey sticks" were ugly, but they grow on ya. Seen some originals that had so much drop in the stock one wonders how they shot them. I'd own yours in a heartbeat.
