I’ve only skinned around 20 coons in my life but when I do skin them I try stripping out the tail and end um ripping it in half leaving the other half still attached to the tail bone what am I doing wrong ? I’m stripping it with a lifetime metal stripper like the one sold at minnesota trap line website. What can I do to pull out the full tail ?

, thanks in advance

Owen

It helps me to make sure I pull on the base of the tail, not pull with the stripper. Think pull the bone out, not pull the tail off. That's what works for me, bit I am by no means an expert.

The tail is about the 6 min. mark in my video there. Works everytime.

When I open my coons from heel to heel, I then cut around the anus and then I take my knife I use to open with and start at the base of the tail and cut or open about 1/3rd of the way down or with older males until you get to that part of the tail that has been bitten so much i is scared badly. This I cut through. With about 1/3rd of the tail open one can slice on the side and then around and open it up to the end of the cut. Now you can put your tail stripper in that area and then pull on the stripper and hold the base of the tail. Old males are not easy, females and YOY are not hard.

There Is another way. Most coon hunters that skin in the woods just cut the tail bone at It's base and then skin. When they get back to the shop they just place the tail bone In a fixed vice grips and pull out the tail bone. Actually It works pretty good.
