Rex was a long-time member of my camp and a good friend and hunting buddy. I honestly think sitting around camp and "solving the problems of the world" with him and some of the other older members was the best part of camp.

We knew Rex's health was failing and his wife messaged me last week to tell me he was in the hospital again. She said the doctor told him his heart was giving out and ask what his goals were. Rex replied that he just wanted to, "live through the holidays." The Doctors told him, "we think we can do that."

I talked to Rex last Tuesday. We talked about hunting and the upcoming deer season and about camp and just generally had a great conversation, solved a few more of the world's problems. I got a call from his wife late Friday night saying that we had lost him.

Rest in peace old friend.

LugnutRex and many of his age group are priceless . Their knowledge and woodsmanship where learned and earned by going out in the mountains and figuring out how the animals used feed and traveled the terrain to survive in the wild .And that skill benefit all those he hunted with . The litle things they knew where the reason they where successfu and most of that kind of people shared their understanding with the others in the hunting group Most of them had places that where special to them. All from your camp should spend a few minutes in some of those places this upcoming season

Sorry to hear Lug. When you get down to it there will be frightfully few of the children that all of us on this site have who will be as involved in what we do outdoors as we ourselves are.

We are the living last of “that kind” for the most part.

Sorry to hear about your loss. You talking about sitting around camp "solving the world's problems" brings back memories for me too. Only thing different was we all had a beer in hand. A lot more got solved that way!

Godspeed Rex. Sorry for the loss of your friend, leave a stump at the campfire for him. This is unsaid but these are times we have to go over those old stories in our heads so we can keep them going by re telling.
