Was out on a walk today and came across this guy laying in the sun. Wondered why he didnt run right away until I got a good look at him. Looks like some serious mange on his face. Pretty sure he was almost blind as he kept looking my way but not right at me. This little guy was in a game preserve. Dont think he is going to last too long.

I have seen coyotes on trail cams recover from mange. Most of the coyotes ive seen in the daytime have been mangy, The few that i know i have caught in the day have also been mangy.

I was under the impression the mange was terminal. Is that not the case?

"This little guy was in a game preserve."

And this is the fallacy of "game preserves". Game (live wildlife) cannot be preserved. Game populations can be managed with sound conservation practice, but living things cannot be preserved.

Not in as bad of shape as this guy.
I found him on my line, yesterday. Still trying to catch his killer. [Linked Image]

Coyotes have far greater body mass and thus can live much longer with mange then the far smaller reds can. You get yotes you will get far fewer reds and much of that is not that the yotes just find them and kill them. The yotes travel and contaminate the dens etc. and most reds that use those dens will not have a litter that makes the end of the summer.

It looks more like birds ate that fox, than any mammal.

Ivermectin works on mange. If you would catch that fox give him a dose of ivermectin and penicillin.

early mange in a coyote

late stage coyote mange. Yes it is fatal. recovery on a trail cam was never mange to start with

KeithC- I believe you're right but, something killed him in order to make him bird food. He looked like a healthy young fox without any noticeable injuries (besides being eaten).
Something took his life (coyote I would assume), then the birds got to him.

Worst mange I've seen on a fox. I didn't even trap him, it jumped out of some wild roses and tried to run, I ran it down and killed it with my trowel.

I am no expert but i have seen on trail cams the same coyote get mangy and recover from it. I do think most of the time it is fatal, but i do believe it is possible for them to recover probably just not very likely. If you catch a mangy animal, you can give them a shot of ivermectin and turn em loose and that will cure it and the fur will grow back to be caught and skinned later, or at least to breed.

I will agree in the warmer states. But not up North for the most part. I have never seen a Mange animal past January.

very true, it was 81 here today now its cooling off after a storm passed. I dont think a hairless predator would fare well up north.

Maybe that fox will make it then. It seemed that the mange was limited to its facial area. How quickly does mange spread over the body? Anyone know?

Also Im pretty sure I found its den. Are there any antibiotics that can be taken orally? I could mix it in with some sort of bait and place it by its den.

I would guess the oral flea and tick meds would work. They say it is a caused by mites, you would think if it killed fleas and ticks it would kill a mite.

need to use ivermectin. antibiotics wont work.

btw even in the south mange is fatal. eventually secondary infection kills them from all the scabs mange causes.
