I soaked it for about 5 days in a wood ash bath and have it bathed in running water in a creek after I fleshed it. Do I just wait until the hair slips now?

I always left it in the ash water until it was slipping, then I'd scrape it all off and have rawhide to dry and use at a later date.

The hair wasn't slipping after 5 days?

If you want good strong rawhide(babiche)you only need to soak the hide in cold water until the hair loosens, then scrape the hair off on a beam.Make sure you scrape off the grain also(the black epidermis)
If the hair is slipping, the skin is starting to rot and you will have inferior rawhide.

I will add to what Boco said, If you soaked it in any kind of base you have to rinse the base out and neutralize the hide. I personally adjust the rinse to a ph of 4 to 5 as this is the ph of leather that has the longest longevity.
