Long ways from the Arctic Ocean. Ten days of sunshine is coming to an end. I enjoyed myself but I’m sure looking forward to getting home. I felt like one ant amongst millions here. I could never live here but it was a nice visit for sure. Can’t wait to get home now. I’m chomping at the bit to get started trapping.

Took the boy to cabelas yesterday. Now we’re sitting in the plane ready for the last flight of our journey. Thanks to my buddy James for watching the traps but I’m checking them myself today. Can’t wait.

Nice sea-run anadromous Dolly Varden.

We'd call that a char around here - Ryan what is it?

You’re both right. It’s a Sea run anadromous dolly varden char. We just call them char. Nice big silver phase in the picture.

It would be a great lunch.
It takes about 8.5-9 hours of jet and skidoo travel from LAX to my cabin. Temperature difference of 54 degrees. +34 there and -20 when I got back to the north. Sure enjoyed my peace and quiet setting a few traps, fishing and hauling wood at the cabin a couple days ago. Spent 2.5 days out there. Now I’m just home from a day trip caribou hunt down the Dempster. Seen about 1500 bou today. My buddy Greg finally got out hunting and got himself a couple caribou. I hunted for my grandparents and my parents. Just going to start skinning in the warehouse and have some nice clean meat ready for my grandpa to pick up tomorrow via the ice road from Aklavik. Still getting a few foxes but I’m about to start on lynx. Got my first 2 couple days back in traps just set the night before so it’s looking good. Last thing before I get skinning (ahem, cough, cough...deep breath) on our way home before a single set of fresh wolf tracks hit the road. Smoking fresh because it’s been snowing all day. Long story short I spotted the wolf step off the road and floored the 350 over there. Jumped out and grabbed the magnum then walked a couple steps off the road Greg shined his flashlight and the pale grey was right there. Maybe 75 feet away from me. I cycled the bolt and took careful aim and gently squeeeeezed and click. Nobullets. Afterwards I walked a ways out behind it through thin timber with 243 and spotted it briefly twice. No second chance on that wolf though. Through knee deep wet snow I did the walk of shame back to the truck. Would’ve been a nice bonus but you know what? I’m pretty sure I’ll see another one sometime.

My slow so far season just got a boost today. I had a couple mb750 set at a carcass pile at the very end of my poor marten line and pulled up to this nice surprise. Reset this spot and added the one snare I had with me. Got a couple nice lines to look at out at my cabin so I’ll be expanding those over the coming weeks. I can keep yapping but I’ve got some salmon heads to sample while wolfs feet and face are thawing. I had him by one toe.

Seen two moose on Napoik heading towards your country. They were clipping along. Did not see anything chasing them though.
