Homemade booby trap in Maine kills man who rigged it to protect residence

A Maine man who rigged his home with booby traps to thwart intruders has been killed after tripping one of his own devices.

Van Buren police said they were called to Ronald Cyr’s home on Thanksgiving Day in the early evening after he called 911 to report he had been shot.

“Regretfully, Mr. Cyr succumbed to the injuries he sustained from the gunshot,” police said in a news release.

Police said officers on the scene then found the front door had been booby-trapped with a device designed to fire a handgun should anyone attempt to enter through the door.

Other unknown devices were also discovered, causing alarmed investigators to contact the Maine State Police Bomb Squad, police said.

After an extensive investigation, it was determined Cyr has been shot as the result of the unintentional discharge of one of his homemade devices, they said.

Dang.

At least he knew his traps worked...

Darwinism strikes again.

Sounds similar to "set guns" used by poachers many years ago to kill unsuspecting deer and I suppose other game, whatever tripped the gun. A number of young kids were maimed or killed by those awful traps.

That's not the first time it's somebody's booby-trap has more or less backfired.
There was a well-known but will remain unnamed TV reality show individual who the natives nicknamed "he who shoots himself in the elbow". Years ago the guy had booby-trapped his cabin, apparently he came back, forgot about the booby trap, opened his door and shot himself in the elbow.
And no, it wasn't Heimo Korth.

My ex roommate made several gopher poppers I told him he could get some serious time having homemade short barreled like 4" long w/ trigger in front loaded w/ a 12 ga non# he was so stupid! beyond stupid put those things out in his own yard, good god! He thought it was so cool... I threw the firing pins away... he probably made more.... Can't fix stupid... His roof leaked too but only when it rained! ba ha ha

Right after I got my CT Trapping License, all of a sudden - my Blue Jeep started getting heater hoses cut, like every couple of days - the final straw was the fuel line getting cut going to the carb.... I wasted not time setting a couple of 330's up on top of the motor and a huge 1216 underneath in case brake lines were next.

I made one phone call - one phone call - as a warning to a person who I felt might know who was responsible, whether directly or indirectly... and that was it: vehicle was never messed with again, and this was a couple of years ago...

I wish I could say the same about my Country Squire Wagon, but I don't think it's the anti's who gave that vehicle a severe case of Electrolysis which wrecked the entire cooling system, but that's another story... and sadly what is sending an otherwise fine vintage automobile to the auto graveyard......
