Had a beaver in a Duke #4 can by the toes this morning. When I got there he dove and popped out of the trap.
Is he never going near a set baited with Backbreaker again or do I have another shot at him?
He was a big adult.

Just happy to be here.

You can still catch him, though he'll probably be leary of coming to Backbreaker again anytime soon. The great thing about footholds is theyre better at catching spooked critters than anything else.

Try another location close by and another lure...maybe food lure or some peeled bait sticks. I also have caught that type of beaver with just some mud and a drop or two of sac oil. It may need several days to recuperate.

Forget about that one,go catch some more.
You can come back in winter and get him under the ice in a snare.

Don't think of it as a missed beaver. Think of it as seed for the future.

He wont be causing any problems this time of year-go back and get him after ice or in the spring.
If you got a small and missed the big, there is likely 4 or 5 more there for the taking.

Blind set it with 330s and snares. The only thing it is wised up to right now is castor. That's a good thing. if the old boy had been pinched by a half submerged 330, He would now be slydog shy and avoid anything which smells like you.

If you find a spot where he gose up on the bank or over set blind with a foothold.Use no lure or bait just where it gose. I had one this season that seen the one it must of been with caught in a snare on land and it trip the 2 snares in the same trail I caught the first one, I also fix up a 220 like a game warden taught me on to catch them on land I I had caught some that way . What I did is pull all the snares and 220 . Took a coyote trap that was blood up and 2 stakes I made 4' long and cross stake the foothold trap in the water that the trap when set the trap dose not get on land to dry off. I caught the beaver the next day a good front foot catch above the joint on the front foot. I use no lure or bait. Just to give some ideas on it.

Just accomplished that this am -- had a toe in a #5 yesterday and had him in a different #5 about 25 yards away this am (minus one toe).

Yes, beaver was able to pull the rod on shore. Trap swivel was fouled with weeds which I think was the main problem

Keep on going. Beaver are not half as smart as people give them credit for.

I have been doing nuisance beaver work year round for 20 years, where you have to catch all of them including the last one. I have educated a few in that time span to the point of them being uncatchable. One of them was unshootable. Smelled me coming every time. I ended up tearing its dam out so many nights in a row that it finally gave up and moved away.

Slydogx, I had losses with the #4 duke(#3 bridger) also and for some reason I started to use the Duke #3. Much better results almost no pull outs now. Just a thought......jk
