Hey all.
My 5 year old Black Lab has had 4 seizures (that we know of) over the last year.
The vet recommended Zonisamide. Before I start her on anything I'd like to know if any of you have had dog with the same condition and what you did to help them.

Thank you
Jerry

Seizures can be fatal because the dog overheats. When your dog has a seizure take measures to cool him down. I don't have any experience or advice to offer regarding seizure medications.

Seizures can be caused by a variety of conditions. One dogs situations may be entirely different than anothers. All you can do is listen to the vet.

My walker was having them usually when he got worked up over something. To my knowledge he has quit having them it seems altogether. I wonder if it wasn't some kind of food related problem.

My daughters dog has them. She changed her food and got some medicine from the vet. The dog is doing a lot better, but she still has them, about once a month maybe. It was about once every three days and a couple times a day sometimes.

I have a dog that has them. She just had a round on Friday. I give her phenobarbital. It used to be a 24-36 hour period every 2 months or so. Then there was 7-8 months of nothing and now 2 episodes within the 4 weeks. Hers are the grand mal, can have several in the 24-36 hour period, affects her sight, and are not pleasant to watch.

I had a dog that hand them starting when the dog was a few years old. They got to be more frequent as the dog aged. I didn't pursue medication. The dog died of cancer at 12 years of age.
I noticed my dog seemed to get them when he was in or near sticker (black berry) bushes.

I had two beagles that used to have them. I was asking a person I knew if their beagles had them and they told me that one of them had seizures and changing their food fixed it. Didn't work for me, but might be worth a try.

Sorry for you dog. I am dog lover and hate it when one gets sick. Over the years we have had three or four sled dogs that suffered from seizures.
I do not recall what the Vet recommended as it was a while back. We put them on the vet recommended meds and they all did pretty good and it cut down on the seizures. We never ran any of those dogs again and they lived out nice quiet lives as pet her on the place.
Good luck

My short hair had them, started when his was about 4. They were severe, lose his Blatter and pop his anal gland every time. I hated them, usually would happen in the middle of the night. He was on phenobarbital and eventually they added 2 more don't recall what the other 2 were. But got to be expensive, when he was on all 3 it was close to 300$ a month. Eventually it got so bad it was nonstop and the last night we had him he had them 1 after another. Couldn't not get to the vets fast enough. I hope to never have to go through that again, and feel sorry for any dog that has them.

We have a friend with a dog that had seizures bout twice a week. We gave her a blend of Doterra essential oils that we made that she puts on her dogs belly daily and now hasn't had a seizure for coming up on 9 months.

Pa,
We have a black lab that has them he is on vet recommended medicine it helped some then we also started giving him CBD oil seems a little better now about every third month in the middle of the night usually he will have a couple. We have also noticed if we have a low pressure weather system roll thru that can trigger them or severe thunder storms

My dog started having seizures after I used a Ivermectin based wormer. She would have several a week for several weeks after being worked. Once I stopped using that for wormer they went away. I feel very blessed that I was able to isolate the cause. Good to know there are essential oils and that CBD can also help if I have issues in the future.
I hope that all the other dog owners find something that helps theirs. It is a terrible thing to watch.

I still think it was something in the food, I feed iams now because of arthritis but I think it helped in other areas too. Guys will talk about thyroid dogs, and I had one of those too. But he was eating the same food as the dog who was having seizures. Who knows what kind of junk is in dog food, and where it actually originates. Probably some food or ingredients are chinese, and they can't figure out not to use lead paint on children's toys.

My dog was getting seizures about once per week. After testing, the vet put her on Phenobarbital and she now gets a seizure about once per year. The seizures last about 20 minutes and then she is fine.

My chocolate lab has them.

We use phenobarbitol.

Seems like they come in clusters. She'll have a couple in one day then go a couple months without one.

Super stressful on the dog and my family.

My black lab gets em few times a year. He takes a phenobarbital tablet one a day it helps. If he goes into a seizure he gets a few tablets in a hot dog once his face relaxes enough to swallow and he normally comes back.
