Am I better off putting a normal sized red fox on a duke #4 wire stretcher or on a large wood coon stretcher?

If you are getting it tanned it doesn't really matter, but, better off to put it on a wood fox stretcher if you will market as a dried pelt. Take the 10-15 minutes to make one, then you will have one for the next ones. Easy to make wooden stretchers.all you need is a hand saw, rasp, and sandpaper. I have seen them made in the bush with just a hatchet and crooked knife.

Thanks, but that didn't answer my question. Which of my two suggestions is better? I'm just putting it up to sell, not to have tanned.

A coon board is too big you wont realize the true value of the pelt if you stretch it on that. I don't know what size a 4 wire is but I know buyers are leery about fox or any fur out animal stretched on wire. Some guys turn the pelts too soon and there is problems when those pelts are dressed.because it is hard to determine the damage,if any, until they come back from the dressers the buyer/grader will tend to discount a wire stretched fur out pelt. So,best to do it right,If you have lots of coon boards it would only take a couple minutes to plane down the sides then sand to have a proper shaped foxboard, although it will be a bit short.

I thank you guys for your help. I skinned this fox yesterday and have to put it up today. I work 3rd shift and have been awake since 6:00pm yesterday. It is now 12:36 and I have to be back up for work at 6 tonight. I dont have the time to make a fox board. I was just wondering what my best option was. Thanks again. Tony

I agree with Nightlife, rushing fur put up leads to all kinds of other problems as well.

It wouldn't be too hard to cut down one of your coon boards, might be a little short but should work okay.
Like nightlife said, freeze it until you have a chance to make a suitable board.
Eh...wot?

Tony What a stupid reply to folks trying to help you...in fact, both your replies. How bout before you trap a fox you make sure you have the proper stretcher to get the job done so you don't have to ask and then condem the proper answers. What they are saying is that your two choices for stretching properly are not options...neither. Get it?
