The pipe is an invisible weatherproof bait holder. If you’re making the set as instructed, pound the pipe into a clump of grass till only a couple inches are out of the ground. Should be virtually invisible unless you’re standing right on top of it

I’ve only used the heavy duty black screen so I can’t speak for the aluminum stuff, I fold mine in half like I’m going to make a paper airplane but don’t crease it flat, just a slight pre bend so that the screen is hitting on the middle of the pan and slightly up on the edges of the pan. Then all 4 corners are tucked under the jaws. I cut a 4”x4” hole in the ground then pound out some ledges for the jaws to rest on, and pound two spots for the levers. Then I set my trap beyond the night latch, and put my fingers under the pan to keep it from firing, and beat on the jaw posts, the levers and the jaws to bed it into the ground. I raise the loose jaw, set the pan to the night latch, slide my pre bent screen into place, lower the loose jaw and beat all the earth around the outside of the jaws to lock it all in.

Zagger could probably give a way better explanation, but that’s the best advice I can give.

Thanks! Where do you buy your black screen? The only black screen at Home Depot was really flimsy.

No BS, O’Gorman, Keg Creek all sell it. I know I bought 5 dozen from Kendal at the Iowa convention for something like $40 this past summer. Not sure about prices from the other guys

Try this. Norm Mullins showed me this and it works great to keep the grass flat. Cut your wire to fit inside our jaws. Cut two slits in the wire and slip it onto the pan. Lays flat. Looks like this.

I gotcha, so you are sliding the pan through the two slits. That's pretty slick, thanks, I'll give it a try tonight. Thanks

Pretty slick, might save some foul language when the screen moves around when covering.

Wish I had more time to trap....

I heard about this before and I started doing this to take the "bubble" out this year. Way, way better!!! I hadn't see a picture, but that is exactly how mine look over the pan. I still cut mine long enough to fit under both jaws I guess.

It still slides around some - it won't work on some traps with dogs unless you cut a ''V'' for the pan post under the pan.

I do a variation of this bedding style when I blind set heavy coon trails. I have never tried a screen in any set so forgive me I am a wax paper user. When setting for coons I dig a small bed and pound in my 1.5 coil or number 11 trap and cover with grass and do some guiding.
So what’s the purpose of the screen if your just using grass? keeping the grass from sagging? Increased pan area?

Let water pass through to help prevent freeze up. Wax paper will we water in grass and it can foul the trap.
