Some folks bed their trap in 1 of those clear banana sacks, like from the grocery store. It keeps out the water & can help keep dirt from getting under the pan. I guess it can even help in cold weather. I saw it once at a WTA D5 demo. Does that work ok for a person using some of their coyote traps for bobcat trapping, or could it increase the pan tension enough to cause a concern?

The worst problem I have heard of is that it can cause the trap to scoop up a big wad of snow, letting the foot slip out.I think it works better in consistent,sub-zero temperatures like AK trappers contend with and in that case, the bag shatters. It is possible to overthink this stuff and shoot yourself in the foot.I have never had a need for it.

I think it might work fine on a powerful trap like a 4 coilled MB650.

Not necessary and just creates problems, in my opinion. Personally, I don't want to leave pieces of plastic bags or sandwich bags in the outdoors either.

I messed around for a few years in the snow with different types of trap coverings and sifted snow methods. All I accomplished was learning how to overthink and complicate things. 650's in bags didn't work for me either as wind and sun change snow on a daily basis. I was shocked how much melt can occur around dark steel under the snow, even in the cold. I just don't think we have the weather to do it. Like Taximan said, its just unlikely to consistently have the powder needed.

A few inches for a few days after a storm or an inch or two is great, but it seems anything more than that needs to be maintained so often it wasn't worth it for me. They'll hit a normal dirt pattern in snow when they want in bad enough. I think some could benefit in 24 hour check states like mine to learn when to run sets for 7-10 days and when to pull/snap and wait for stable weather. Just my opinion.

We have had a season of unstable weather here in Michigan with a 24 hour check law and if I was to wait for weather to stabilize I might as well sell my trapping equipment. If I have to fix some sets every day I will and I try things to make due in this weather. Improvise,Adapt, Overcome. Bags work, wax dirt works, moving to heavier cover works. There are a lot of things that work. If all else fails go set some water traps while it is warm. I enjoy my time in the woods, a little weather is not going to stop me from getting out there.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Minnesota has far from stable weather. For me, it seemed like I would go through phases where I was fixing sets everyday and not catching much at all. So I watch the weather quite a bit. I did a lot of experimenting and trying to get by and it taught me what not to do. This is just what works for me.

A 650 does kind of blow the bag to smitherines. I tried it and got a yote the 1st time I tried it. I still have to try it more before I'm sold on the idea. It's an option anyway.
