I have found that in my .243 Ackley the 100gr Nosler Partition has always worked as designed. The front half is fairly expansive and does its job after entering. The back end behind the partition always stays intact and exits. 23 years ago when we built this gun the guys at Nosler recommended NOT using a Ballistic tip.

With that said, I have also used a 7x57 handloaded to about 2900fps using a Speer 130gr Hot Core. Not sure if they are even available anymore, but have worked well on antelope, mule deer, black bear, and caribou. I would not hesitate to use Speer Grand Slams for any given caliber.

Not sure where the ammo industry is headed, but have heard several stories of factory ammo not holding together long enough to do a correct job on whitetails.

I'm pretty sure, no bullet, including monolithic, will stay intact at 3600 Fps. I'd be real surprised if you could find any manufacturer's literature that stated it would.

Yes. Same as 330. Haven’t looked in a while but we could use rimfire cartridges if over a certain caliber but nothing in modern production meets the requirements.

That’s what it was. I don’t think anyone is making anything commercially that large. Years ago, a guy used to use a 5mm with great success. Then the laws changed and he no longer could.

Thanks for the info. I am curious to hear your feedback with the ELD bullet. I just loaded some 178 gr eldx to try out of my .308. Had issues with the SST not exiting or leaving blood. Incredible terminal damage but I like blood trails. Please report back on the eld bullet.

John

Well, here goes:
My time with the ELD-X has been somewhat limited and only one I’ve used to date is the 7mm 162 grain. Now, prior to that I’d been using the A-Max with good results. It’s essentially the same bullet with a slightly “better” tip they say. However, if you like blood trails, this may not be for you. If the SST wasn’t pleasing you, I doubt the ELD’s will either. Don’t get me wrong, they shoot great and destroy whatever they hit. But, they’re quite frangible. 7mm entry hole. Maybe an exit the size of a quarter. Once the skin is removed, my entry wounds have been first sized. It’s opening way too early for deep penetration. But, for deer, it’s typically not needed.

The A-Max did about the same. Vaporized inside 75 yards. Behaved like a hollow point out to about 225 and then after 300 yards it had shed enough velocity that it would peel back like in interlock. They were 155’s though out of a 308. I e just found that they appear to be softer than the SST.

Moving past the whole if you kill it dead or not... doesn't shooting critters you eat with Vmax bullets not make sense simply due to the undetectable contamination of the meat you would have from all the splatter?

Sure. But unless you’re using a monolithic, there’s going to be lead “splatter”. C-n-C bullets will behave similarly. Some better than others but if it expands and doesn’t retain 100% of its weight, there’s potential for contamination. Granted, bullets designed for rapid expansion drastically increases those odds.

used a 25/06 since 1978 loaded a lot of sierra 117 grain game kings Don't reload or shoot much anymore so I buy Winchester 120 grain psp's both super accurate But I learned fast not to bother looking for a blood trail 25-75 yards from the last sighting is as far as they make it
