I’d consider myself a novice trapper at best. Have experience with bobcats and yotes. I have the opportunity to attempt to trap a mountain lion. Not many around here but this one is confirmed by a reliable source. Anyone in here that can offer advice. Trap? Type of set? Bait? Lure?

Same sets as a bobcat will catch a lion. Espesially a walkthrough set. I am bias to an exposed trap, but a buried trap would work just as good. We catch them indecently almost every year in them

Thanks for the reply. I have Bridget #3’s and some #4 long springs. Will these work?

Those will work just fine. We've held them in 1-3/4 sized traps, but of course that wouldn't be ideal haha. with the Bridger #3s you might want to weld a bubble on the ends on the jaws. We've had them pop the jaws before on those which is why I don't bubble any jaws haha. Trapping isn't a legal method of take in Nevada, and while they are easy to release once you know how, I would rather they be gone before I get to the set so I don't have to waste time dealing with them.

Thanks for the help! We don’t have any restrictions in Texas. No open or closed season so I can chase him as long as he’s around

I had one absolutely DESTROY. A Duke 1.75 it took maybe ten minutes but it was on a very short chain and was actually just a scent post for a coon

I agree with treating then like a bobcat. I’ve never trapped one but I run them with hounds and they have a lot of the same habits as bobcat. I have had them come Check out my bobcat cages but I ageee with cat_trapper_nv on using the walk through set. Most that I chase don’t come to bait, they prefer to eat a kill for a few days then go kill something fresh.

A good hand posted a picture of a big cats paw beside his own and it made me think you should consider using the biggest and sturdiest gear you can get your hooks in.

always check sets with someone way slower than you in case of trap failure or pull out at the last minute.

Hahaha. Yes it does. I should have added that everyone of them was released unharmed, and very lively.

This is our last year we can trap and keep them, I use a #2 size trap(KB) with everything welded I set the trap so the cat steps over the jaw not between them. A cats foot is big and might not turn if the trap closes on the side of the foot. I also use the Connors shock spring(100 pound), 20 plus feet of chain and Poncho to let me know whats happening he treed one once had two that day love my Airedale!

I would recommend at least a #3 and offset or laminated that way maybe he won't make pretzels out of your trap.
I myself hope to avoid the longtails but it doesn't always work.

Now remember, we don't have any big cats in Arkansas. Just a couple of bobcats and maybe a stray Siamese or two. :-)
