Ok so I gave my neighbor a courtesy message that I would be setting trap in my property(renting, but had permission from landlord) across the road from them. ( they have 2 German Shepherds that are always on everyone’s property because they are not put up when owners leave for the day). So instead of contacting me about her complaint she called other neighbors and then my landlord all upset about me trapping and now I can’t trap. My landlord is a sweet elderly woman who doesn’t want to be in the middle and doesn’t want any drama between neighbors( we are way out in the country and we all know each other).
So I have contacted her and asked if we could talk in person about this. Waiting for a response.

I would like a chance to defend myself and maybe see if we can come to an understanding. I would never intentionally hurt a non target animal, and would be responsible about dispatching target animals. I’m just getting into trapping and my husband just bought me my first traps for Christmas (got them early) I have a couple of traps with the rubber on them and a few without. Sorry I’m just really disappointed, I was super excited to get started.
Have any of you had to deal with this? Any tips to help get them on my side ! Thank you.

Do you have a leash law where you live.

From what I have read, we do. But almost no one on “the hill” abides by it. Which really hasn’t been an issue because they are great dogs and we all love them. but now that I want to trap and our property I don’t know what to do. I have only put out the rubber traps because I do not want to hurt them if they did happen upon them.

Well right now all seasons are open. But main targets would be coyote(we back up to 180acres of forest and there are ALOT of them! And we hunt for deer there) raccoons, foxes

IMHO I would look into your states hunter harassment laws. These laws are in place for situations just like this. She interrupted your legal pursuit of game. I may not win but I'd make her regret poking here nose in my buisness.

EDIT***just noticed your from indiana as well I'd be contacting my local CO and get started on the hunter harrassment paperwork

I agree, I just don’t want to be THAT neighbor, our landlord has known most of them for 20 years and we have only lived here two. I’m in good with them all but this is just a serious letdown for me.

Being neighborly isn’t what it used be... After creating more problems by letting folks know I just don’t anymore. No win situation for the trapper & a few times I lost permission. Can’t fault the land owner either as they need to keep the best possible relations with their neighbors. I won’t give those neighbors the opportunity to cost me permission to trap.

I’m honestly trying to avoid any altercation with them as I like them. We do have those laws here but I don’t want to make a big issue with them and end up no being able to trap at all, like giving trappers a bad name kind of issue. But at the same time I know I am within my rights to trap, I just passed my hunters safety course with flying colors and have my trapping license. And they also chase the deer off. And we hunt on our property.

What Thumbian said...

No coyote trap...padded or non will hurt a G.Sh..... if released on a daily basis

Don't tell the neighbors next time! ... just release non targets

Good neighbors dont control what happens on there neighbors land. If your as Passionate about it as ya seem to be I'd be protecting your right to trap best as I could. I understand where your coming from about not wanting to cause waves with neighbors. But she broke LAWS you haven't. That's my 2 cents though I'll jump off my soap box

Recently went thru this w/ neighbors 1/4 mile away but I own my land and did trap 4 coyotes and 2 coon here. They had 1 german shepard the leader ( he's dead) a black lab and a big brown bear looking thing. Anyways talked to them 4 times keep them off my land ( the last time I bleepn bleepn blew up) I don't want them running the deer over here.... Anyways what solved it was I set trail cams documented the trespass and called the sheriff they warned them... still dogs over... more pictures, sheriff comes out writes them a misdemeanor dogs at large and unregistered dogs, they had to pay... Guess what? no more dogs for several months now trail cameras are awesome! time stamped etc. I did it all on line emails to the deputy uploaded pics... Tell it to the judge butthead neighbors, dogs at large are no joke subsidized wolves all they are they ran the deer hard around here, coyotes were bad enough but got those knocked down too... So I expect to see more fawns this spring. I really enjoy watching the deer feed in the evenings and interact w/ each other. Not to mention a nice one for the dinner table not wasted in the woods somewhere buzzard bait...

It seems that’s what I have done, even though I was trying to be a responsible trapper since I know their dogs come on our property. And yeah I don’t want to cause our landlord any issues. We love her and she doesn’t need or deserve the drama. I just didn’t want to catch one of them and have to tell them then and have a huge drama fest about it.

Sometimes ya gotta quit being the nice guy and stand your ground... especially if they are the ones breaking the law and violating you. If they don't understand not the kind of friendly neighbors you need.

That’s what I’m hoping to be able to explain to them, my landlord has already said no unless I can get the neighbors on with it. She was totally fine with it before this. I feel like I shot myself in the foot being respectful.

Same issue here with my menonnite neighbors........couldnt set coyote traps last yr on my own place because their dogs were constantly on my cameras. Spoke to them nicely about it and resolved nothing so after that when they showed up dog warden was called twice. Sure slows it down now since they got fined.

Haha. No I agree. If I owned this property and wasn’t renting things would be going a bit different. But that’s not the case. I’m really just hoping to be able to change their mind and com to an understanding so I can get my permission back. Ugh!

If you want to stay friends with neighbors then I would find someplace else to trap. I know that's backing up from the problem but I don't see where you have a choice.

And catching a German Shepard In any kind of trap can be very dangerous to the person releasing that animal.
