Ok so I gave my neighbor a courtesy message that I would be setting trap in my property(renting, but had permission from landlord) across the road from them. ( they have 2 German Shepherds that are always on everyone’s property because they are not put up when owners leave for the day). So instead of contacting me about her complaint she called other neighbors and then my landlord all upset about me trapping and now I can’t trap. My landlord is a sweet elderly woman who doesn’t want to be in the middle and doesn’t want any drama between neighbors( we are way out in the country and we all know each other). So I have contacted her and asked if we could talk in person about this. Waiting for a response.
I would like a chance to defend myself and maybe see if we can come to an understanding. I would never intentionally hurt a non target animal, and would be responsible about dispatching target animals. I’m just getting into trapping and my husband just bought me my first traps for Christmas (got them early) I have a couple of traps with the rubber on them and a few without. Sorry I’m just really disappointed, I was super excited to get started. Have any of you had to deal with this? Any tips to help get them on my side ! Thank you.

Do you have a leash law where you live.

From what I have read, we do. But almost no one on “the hill” abides by it. Which really hasn’t been an issue because they are great dogs and we all love them. but now that I want to trap and our property I don’t know what to do. I have only put out the rubber traps because I do not want to hurt them if they did happen upon them.

Well right now all seasons are open. But main targets would be coyote(we back up to 180acres of forest and there are ALOT of them! And we hunt for deer there) raccoons, foxes

IMHO I would look into your states hunter harassment laws. These laws are in place for situations just like this. She interrupted your legal pursuit of game. I may not win but I'd make her regret poking here nose in my buisness.
EDIT***just noticed your from indiana as well I'd be contacting my local CO and get started on the hunter harrassment paperwork

I agree, I just don’t want to be THAT neighbor, our landlord has known most of them for 20 years and we have only lived here two. I’m in good with them all but this is just a serious letdown for me.

I’m honestly trying to avoid any altercation with them as I like them. We do have those laws here but I don’t want to make a big issue with them and end up no being able to trap at all, like giving trappers a bad name kind of issue. But at the same time I know I am within my rights to trap, I just passed my hunters safety course with flying colors and have my trapping license. And they also chase the deer off. And we hunt on our property.

It seems that’s what I have done, even though I was trying to be a responsible trapper since I know their dogs come on our property. And yeah I don’t want to cause our landlord any issues. We love her and she doesn’t need or deserve the drama. I just didn’t want to catch one of them and have to tell them then and have a huge drama fest about it.

That’s what I’m hoping to be able to explain to them, my landlord has already said no unless I can get the neighbors on with it. She was totally fine with it before this. I feel like I shot myself in the foot being respectful.

Haha. No I agree. If I owned this property and wasn’t renting things would be going a bit different. But that’s not the case. I’m really just hoping to be able to change their mind and com to an understanding so I can get my permission back. Ugh!

If you want to stay friends with neighbors then I would find someplace else to trap. I know that's backing up from the problem but I don't see where you have a choice.
And catching a German Shepard In any kind of trap can be very dangerous to the person releasing that animal.
