Ebsurveyor since you where out with him can I ask how he keeps the muskrats?I would think he would have to add something to them to keep them from freezing and I personally can't think of how I would carry them because 4 or 5 rats would fill up a gallon container.I`m surprised he doesn`t grind them and just put a spoonful down the hole to make it more convenient. Now don`t everybody jump on me because I know what he`s doing is working,I`m just wondering how he carrys them and such. Most of us carry a pint container that we can make a lot of dirt holes out of. When I was there Robert was saving coon & coyote glands. His 'rats are frozen and kept in a freezer. He thaws out a five gal bucket as needed and cuts them into 4 or 6 pieces and fills quart plastic jars each night. Note the bait cutting that was done each night, see photo. He also has pint jars of a bobcat based bait that he makes. At each stop he makes at least one set with each bait. Sometimes he will joke about lure and drip out some 'rat blood on the dirt at the back of the hole. He also said something like "a coyote in a trap is the best lure you can get". He did carry a 1 oz. bottle of Hawbaker's gland lure, said it was good for 'cats. I never saw him use it and it was red fox gland lure. BTW, Robert gave me permission to share stuff with you all, but I'm keeping some secrets to myself. Thanks for the reply.I thought I read somewhere he was using a half a rat down each hole.Makes more sence now.Does he add something to keep it from freezing?

Is he snaring much or just footholds? The Beav or EB can answer for sure but I thought his deal was no snares. Foot holds only.

"Does he add something to keep it from freezing?"
It appears his sets don't lay around empty long enough to worry about freezing. I don`t think it would matter if it froze a little in the hole but a bait container full of solid bait would be a pain.It apparently has not been that cold though.

Here's something interesting. I asked If he ever used a siren to locate family groups when setting up new ground. He said in Kansas being big cattle country all the feed wagons are equipped with sirens to a alert the cattle when the feed was being dumped. So coyotes didn't react to a siren.
