142-pound cougar hit by car in northern Minnesota The photos are being shared like crazy. BringMeTheNewsDec 7, 2018 Jesse Koskiniemi File this one in your memory as something you don't see every day. A large cat, believed to be a cougar, was hit by a car and killed in northern Minnesota near the small town of Nimrod. Jesse Koskiniemi captured photos of the big cat and said it weighs 142 pounds, with paws the size of a grown man's hands. According to the Minnesota DNR, cougars, also referred to as mountain lions or pumas, are "highly secretive" and encounters with them are extremely rare in Minnesota. The weight of cougars varies by gender, with females weighing up to 140 pounds while male cougars tip the scales up to 220 pounds. Nimrod is located about 50 miles northwest of Brainerd in north-central Minnesota. Google Maps Tagswildlifenorthern Minnesotacats By BringMeTheNews

"Believed to be a cougar" Sure it is not a feral house cat? Chris That is the BS all Game and Fish Departments put out when something unusual shows up. If you had seen it run across the road and reported it to them, they would have said, you misidentified it, that it was just a large feral housecat.. Garry-

First MN.encounter I had with a cougar was probably 30 years ago when trapping near Askov.Had to stop the truck to keep from hitting the cougar,as it passed right in front of me. Had to laugh as some of the locals said I saw a bobcat--yea right a bobcat over 100 pounds with a 3 foot tail--LOL. DNR did send someone to that area and confirmed what I had seen. Tom

Tom Dad and I got one cornered by accident about 15 years ago on a lake Rally is familiar with. When it screamed at us my old dog just wanted to crawl inside my coat.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Have run into them west of the cities and while trapping in Northwestern MN. Be hauling out several beaver, and run into fresh cougar tracks going the same way you have to go.Makes the hair on the back of your neck stand right up. Tom

Local kid that runs dogs around here. Law Dog, how far outside of the black hills do mountain lions usually range? Obviously they travel this way but when hunting them, how far north, south, east or west is reasonable to expect to find them? When I was out there a couple years ago I was at least hoping to see some tracks but no such luck. When I was leaving the black hills I saw sticking out of a snow drift on the highway a very large fluffy tail and very large canine back legs and feet. I should have turned around somewhere to confirm it but nobody will convince me that it was anything but a wolf. This was only about a half hour to an hour east. This is also the kind of thing I point out when people ask me why I carry a firearm at all times in the woods around here. Besides the random stupid wolf or coyote there are lions to think about and they have been confirmed in this area. Cameron

Cougar have been seen in Wind Lake and Union Grove in SE WI. They've been in the Phillips, WI area for decades.
