I am getting excited to bring my 3 boys (8 and twin 5's) up to the cabin this weekend to set for the season. There has been a lot of snow this year, this early. Anyone else getting ready?

Some of the property I have access to has them and the deer hunters have some on their cameras. But now that deer hunting is over and I can get onto the property it seems the fishers have disappeared. I did put out some prebaited boxes today (w/o traps) in hopes they still may be around. I've never caught one before and would like to remedy that this year.

Might want to check into putting out pre baited boxes.

Regs say ...no flag, stake, device may be set to preempt a trapping spot

Green Jeans have written tickets for boxes.

Throw bait on the ground or under a log. Place box on opening day.

Just saying as a public service announcement.

Good luck with the catch.

But he can leave his COON boxes out without traps. I would argue that one a little.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Don't mink climb tree in your neck of the woods.
Boco should send you down some so they can teach your mink to climb......that one of Rick's yesterday knows how to circle trees and SMILE.

I have put a lot of miles on walking looking for fisher tracks where I have caught them in years past but have not seen any activity yet. I wonder if all of the deep powdery snow does not limit their movement somewhat. There has been a general lack of rabbits here but even where I have found good rabbit numbers the fisher sign is lacking so far. I have a few more places to look at before I make any decisions on where to set traps if any.

Well until I know for certain, I think I'll just prevail. I know my luck so will hold off on the boxes.

I had fisher sign all over the place prior to our heavy snowfalls and it all but disappeared. I think they sit tight until a warming/freeze spell gives them a crust to run on. Then it's harder to see the sign.

I agree with this since the deep powder has to make it more difficult for them to move a lot too....just like us. We do have a warming spell coming but I doubt it will be enough to form a crust...oh, well. Dang snow is knee deep and worse in the swamps and fields...tough walking.

I had planned on running a small line but due to the snow and lack of a snowmobile I dont think ill be able to. I like the later season, just didnt work in my favor this year.

Same here so Santa hooked Logan up with a 1972 Yamaha Enticer. I have to go get it tomorrow so he can run traps.

No argument needed my friend. Totally agree with you. Not trying to be the Internet PoPo just speaking from the experience of a friend. Run across the wrong CO and things can happen. I pre-baited cubbies for years. Not anymore.

Now back to the program. Have fun guys and girls chasing fur.

I took beaver carcasses and fleshing out of the freezer this morning so they can thaw and be exposed to air for 24 hours.

Blunt force trama with the sledge hammer to get some of the tissue broken up when they are frozen gets those odour out.

Got the traps at the shelter in the woods. The two young men I took out trapping last year are back, and we are ready and waiting! I see a few beaver hanging in some of our old spots already, but it is a big woods and there is plenty of room.
[Linked Image]

Just a small aside: they were up scouting a couple weeks ago and got their truck buried in the middle of nowhere. I had to pull them out with the 4runner and chains. They showed up today with a thank you gift for the Toyota!

Can't beat friends like that!
Not sure why they are sideways, but those are the two young men and their father.
A couple years ago when I noticed them trapping near me I could have been upset, but instead decided to help them out a bit. Look at the fun I would have missed if I would have been bitter.

Hopefully I will be posting fur pics by the end of the weekend!
Jim

I don't want to start a big debate but that is preempting a spot even if a season is open.
