This a part of American history that is not well known. Many people are descendants from riders and they don't know it.

There was a cool movie, I saw on TV about orphan trains back in the late 70s or early 80s. They had terriers killing rats in pits in it, which was my favorite part. The orphans were catching the rats to sell to get money for food.

I was unaware of the trains until about ten years ago when I was introduced to the song Orphan Train written by Utah Phillips. Sime really interesting history

I used to know a woman put on one of those trains when she was five yo because her mother died and the people/laws of her city and the time would not allow a single father to raise a daughter, or so she said. Her story was she'd have been safer living on the streets in her home city, was essentially a slave in a couple of "adoptive" families before she got married at a very young age to escape her adoption. One tough old gal.

My wife's mother found out she was a "rider" when she was probably 60 years old. She was just a baby when they shipped her off. She found out that she came from New York. She landed in E. St. Louis, Il.
Her parents never told her she was adopted. She found out because the children she went to school with told her. She told me that she sneaked in her mothers room and found papers that verified it. She never told her parents that she knew.
My wife never knew her mother was adopted until she was middle age.
Adoption was something different then. It had a stigma. You were looked at differently if you were adopted.
The number of children shipped down that road makes it clear that there are MANY orphan train descendants. Because of the adoption stigma of the day, many people don't realize that they are one.

I think I found the same movie. It's called "Orphan Train".

I was 9 when it came out.

"Orphan Train" is the same movie I was remembering. I really enjoyed it as a child.
