These things are pretty enough. Are they worth a hoot? I'm thinking of getting a 7mm-08. Seems to be the best low recoil, all around, flat shooting rifle, using over the counter ammo I can come up with. Should be a good go to rifle I think.

Is there a better looking more accurate reliable 7mm-08? I don't really like black stocks or stainless barrels. Call me crazy.

I'm just dreaming. Not like I can deer hunt with it in Ohio. Be nice to have, be comfortable with, and be able to grab it on the way out the door for some dream hunt. Coyote, Deer, Sheep, Elk, Bear... seems like it does about everything.

The Winchester Model 70 Rifle has been around a long time. I have one chambered in .30-06 I use it for deer here in PA. I find it to be an excellent rifle and very accurate. I was shooting it a little before deer season at the range. Factory ammo at 100 yards and I was grouping the size of a dime. The rifle model has a pretty rich history. In the early days of Vietnam, it was even used by the American military as a sniper rifle. That should tell you a little something right there.

I had a mod 70 xtr 25-06. Finally sold it because I didn’t want to hassle with bedding, etc to get it to shoot ok. It was the least accurate factory rifle I have ever seen, but it sure was pretty.

Get the 7mm-08, great caliber, I would buy Tikka, just my .02.

Not all model 70's are the same. Rifles built before 1964 were a hunting rifle standard. Often called the riflemans rifle. From the mid 60's to the mid 70's they had a lot of problems. Winchester wanted to produce a cheaper rifle to compete with remington. They made some improvements to the bolt sometime in the 70's or 80's but triggers were awful and accuracy not any better.

The Winchester brand is today owned by the Olin Corporation and the name is used under license by two subsidiaries of the Herstal Group: Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Belgium and the Browning Arms Company of Ogden, Utah, and they are again producing quality. The new model 70 is the same basic design as the pre 64's, back to using controlled round feed and a claw extractor with a 3 position safety on the bolt. Triggers are the same as the original model 70 also. The actions and barrel are built in Columbia S.C. then sent to Portugal to be put on wood.

I love model 70’s but the new ones aren’t the quality of the older ones. You choice of caliber is excellent.

I have a model 70 in .270 that I got 25 years ago and it works the same as the day I got it. Never had to replace any parts. I read somewhere if you use them to bear hunt put a piece of tape over the trap door so you don't get nervous and dump your ammo lol!

My wife has a Model70 in 7mm-08, it is a classic compact model and a fine rifle.
Very accurate, we had the trigger worked on and it breaks at 2.5 pounds.
She has killed a ton of deer and a bear with it, all one shot kills as I recall.

I carried a Model 70 for several years when I was younger. It was in .30-06 and new in 1942. It was a great old rifle that I wish I still had. It was owned by a step-uncle that hadn't hunted in decades, and my step-dad carried it when I was too young to hunt. I moved to Idaho in 1981 and asked the uncle if I could take the rifle with me (He hadn't laid eyes on it in 20+ years), he said no. I cleaned it well, cased it, and he took it home. He died about 10 years ago and I assume it was still in his closet then.
My All Purpose Boy hunts with a Model 70 in 7 mm rem mag. It is a 25+ year old gun and he is very good with it. I have no idea when the rifle was made.

I have a pre-64 model 70 .270 that was my grandpas my dads and is now mine. It is still deadly as the day it was new. Sadly for years after 64ish the model went down hill. I have been wanting to get another in a smaller game caliber but have been wairy as I know the models 70's in the 80's and 90's were not good. Glad to hear they are getting back up to speed where they once were.

I have had my grandfathers model 70 in 7x57 great rifle and a great caliber.

Can’t complain about the 7mm-08. Used one for years in a different make and model but it’s a killer cartridge for sure. The new 70’s are every (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) as good as the old 70’s but people living in yesteryear that have a collection of pre-64’s refuse to see it because it’ll somehow “tarnish” the value of their collection. If I couldn’t find a pre-64, I’d get one produced under new ownership. If you’re not hung up on the 70, someone mentioned a tikka. That’s another fantastic option. I’d probably go that route myself even though I’m not a fan of their magazines. Good luck with your purchase going forward.

I have a 700 LVSF in 7-08 and a Mod 7 in 308. Wish they were reversed. The 7-08 is perfect for the Mod 7 in my opinion.

My wife has a 7-08 in a Remington Model 7, she's killed a pile of stuff from deer to bear to moose with it. Great caliber and a nice rifle.

I have a pre 64 model 70 06 It's a tack driver. Don't have a clue about the new ones.

I don't think you can get Tikkas in wood stocks. OhioBoy knows what I'm talking about. Enough said.

The new Model 70s are pretty enough and look well-built. I don't care for the Schnabel foreshocks though.

I know a low end model 70s made in the 90's and early 2000 is the least accurate rifle I ever owned. Best i think i could get it to group was a good 2-3" and that was with ALOT of different ammo i tried. I however killed a pile of deer with that rifle. First gun i ever bought i think. Eventually the safety got a catch in it and you had to just about take a hammer to get out of the fire position. I hear the new ones are once again good guns but i havent handled any. I would love to have a pre-64 m70 in 30-06.
