How often do you guys often wait for fishers? I’m specifically trapping PA so I guess we don’t have a huge abundance but decent amount.

Do they take a while to come back through ? I just don’t want to be setup in the wrong spot or are they passing it and not working it.

Leave your traps in place, you have such a short season, and fisher can take awhile to return. Try pre baiting before the season to get them coming and see which locations get hit.

Saw your post, good catch , couldn’t comment on it cuz I couldn’t get logged in.

Thanks for the comments guys, I think it was Sunday I followed around a set a tracks for a while and made like 3 cubbies. It’s only been a few days and I’m not trying to sound Impatient (although I am excited !) I’m just kinda second guessing it.

My cubby sets were made in hemlocks with some springs running through and then a small marsh at the bottom.
It’s only been 3 days but I was anxious to see your guys experiences

Male and female will vary as to return duration. Females will return sooner whereas males may take two weeks plus from my observation.

One of my sets is along a stream in a cedar swamp. Just checked it this morning and had one run by my set by just a few feet and it didn't even break stride. Second time in a couple weeks where they've run right by me on a couple different sets and didn't even slow down.

They come through in the same general area but I don't have enough traps to plug all the holes. Sign shows up in different places every time they come through.

I don't think they are avoiding them, I think they are missing the wind on them. I have a roadkill skunk wired above that set, have Skunk Junk and Gusto pasted on there, too. Wired deer scraps to the tree.

I had one dance all over a set earlier in the year but it was after a snow/rain/freeze event. Fisher sign just showed up again the past two days so I regrouped a couple of sets and am hoping for the best. They seem to find every gap I have between my sets and I can't fill them all.

To much skunk lure IMO. Just use the deer scraps along with a beaver castor/anise lure.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Thanks, bc. I have several sets out for fisher, all are baited with deer scraps due to a lack of beaver trapping. I use anise and beaver castor, too.

I normally don't go crazy with lure but I knew I was on location and the trap had been setting idle for quite a while. Figured I'd have a better chance of catching their nose.

Sounds to me like too heavy on the lure too (this coming from someone who makes and sells a skunky lure!) LDC certainly helps bring them in, but if you're dead on location, a little bit goes a long way. The last 3 fisher I've caught have been with very little lure use (lured 3-4 weeks ago and none since). I would try another set a ways back from your current set, bait only, no lure, and see what happens.

Far as the OP question on timing, anywhere from 1-3 weeks for return visit in my experience.
Also, I think walk-by's are pretty common. Seems like I'll have one walk by sometimes half a dozen sets, and suddenly decides to go into the next one. So many variables to consider, like how full is his stomach, is there something in your bait/lure/set that triggers curiosity etc, or something else distracts him halfway to your set. I think the key is lots of sets on good habitat and sign, variety of baits and lures, and patience.

Thanks, jwood. I didn't apply all of that lure all at once. This set has been on location for the better part of a month and I've added here and there as I've gone along. I always get cat and fisher sign along this stream bottom and was getting frustrated by the lack of sign. Still haven't seen a cat track there. The fisher didn't even break stride so I think it missed the wind. I haven't seen any evidence where it worked the set any time previously.

Posco....I trap the same running poles year after year. Are you in a new spot ? Are you on the ground with cubbies or leaning poles ? And a good storm front moving in will produce too. If the weather stays Un-eventfull ....it’s a waiting game
