Ok here's the skinny. I had a farmer call and say he has an active coyote den just off the road about 25 yards and across from his cattle. It is on a county highway fairly well traveled. I noticed the pile of dirt last weekend but didnt give it much thought I figured it was just showing through the melting snow he said it has trails coming out from it going five different ways. Now here is my question... in your opinion would coyotes use a den in an open field next to a "busy" road especially this time of year. And if it's not coyotes what's your guess. And how would you set it up...blind on the trails or baited sets near by?

Snares on a one way 15' to 20' cable that puts them in brush or tall weeds. Slide wire.

I didn't think coyotes used dens this time of year.

Usually when someone tells me that it ends up being a badger digging that has been checked out by a few different K9's

Red fox will definitely put their dens in some stupid places here.I doubt if a coyote would though. It usually ends badly with a lot of the pups getting killed on the road and I have even seen some trapped in the rivht of way, which is illegal here.My guess is a pregnant female Red,getting her den ready.I have seen newborn red pups at the endvof February.

Check the tracks. It is possible it's coyotes, I had a active den two years ago mid January. There was a female with a broke back leg that healed funny in the den. I snared eight males around the den before I got her at the den.

So how would you guys set this up? I haven't used cables much but it doesn't scream cable location to me.
