If you were to make a statement about the habitat, attraction and locations where one ends up catching porcupines - do you feel a good porcupine location is attractive to bobcats and fisher? Why and if so how do you guys use this to your benefit?

Porcupines are very scarce here, cant help you with that.
We do have lots of cats(lynx) though and some fisher.
Fisher and cats here depend a lot on the snowshoe hare.I notice when cat pops are at a high, fisher will be less.Fisher cannot compete with a cat for hares in the deep snow.

I have not been in fisher habitat a lot but there were definitely mor bobcats than fisher. When I moved here,26 years ago, there were some porcupines but now, very few.I don't have a clue why but we did have a mule deer die off, several years ago a mountain lions came out of the woodwork to hunt whitetails. That put them in country where I spend most of my so maybe they worked the porkies over.I have found quills in fishers, mountain lions and wolverines here.

That probably doesn't help you much but when we had porcupines,I learned that bobcats would stop and check on a dead one, every time through. They wouldn't eat on it but they sure seemed to be attracted to that smell.I caught 3 bobcats one year by making sets near porkies that I shot.I really believe if a person could bottle that smell,he would have a top shelf bobcat lure.

You're just as apt to see a porcupine feeding on clover as you are on bark. If you can locate a place porcupine like to den up, you might find fisher poking around there. I come across their dens from time to time. Droppings galore.

Porkys are usually around hemlocks for the food and fisher hunt those same areas for the squriles, so it could be a good location.

caught mine lookoing for the porky to come out.he'd go round and round the porky trees but never once went in the porkys hole at the bottom knowin he'd end up with the wrong end of the porky.watched this go on all through rifle season and he was still at it for fisher season.the other place i find the cats and fisher are on big food items.deer dumps are still getting hit hard here.if i didn't have mine i would take big hunks of fresh beaver meat to the venison piles and catch em quick.Sawmill creek on here is the fisher guy in our area Don if ya know him.good luck Don.

Fisher will pray on Porcupines from time to time. So, they share the same habitat.

I can confirm what Taxi says in his last paragraph. Every time I bring a porky home, our cats show an unreal amount of interest in it.....to the point that they want to “roll” on it.

What he said.
I don't know enough about cats with the porkies. Sort of doubt the cats would hunt them. Fisher do hunt them. Porkies can and will get into your fisher traps if you are right on them.

Two days prior to this photo this dirthole had a porky in it. Up until right now I’d never considered the porky scent to be an attractant- in fact, I almost didn’t remake this set because I would have guessed the opposite, I thought the vultures were the only thing brave enough to mess with a porky

So I don't know much about Fisher since we don't have them here but is the head on this thing not huge? Great pics btw

I dispatched a porcupine last year and wired it to a tree with great anticipation in an area where had and were passing through. It sat there for the better part of two months and nothing touched it.

My first catch of the season this year was a porcupine. I disposed of it near one of my sets where cat and fisher typically pass through. Maybe I'd better got take a look.

Bobcats and coyotes around here love porcupines. Not sure if they can hunt one down and kill it. It would be possible if they can get it flipped over on it's back. I've dispatched several porcupines over the years. I take them the legal distance or farther away from the trap. Lay them on their backs so the belly is facing up so the critters can feed on it. I will end up taking coyotes or cats in that area and you will see the evidence of the critters that fed off the the carcass. They seem to always get a few quills around their face from feeding on the porcupine.

There used to be a bait made from porcupine meat base by a individual in Montana, I believe. I heard it was a very effective bait but never used it. Not sure if it is even made anymore. Maybe somebody knows.

Same here like silkyplains says in some areas coyotes get porkies all the time. I've found several kills over the years, usually just a patch of back skin with quills is all that's left. The picture is of a set of porky teeth that the coyotes ate the whole rest of the skull. The coyotes all seem to have a few quills but I have caught others that were badly quilled in the face, neck, mouth, eye, etc. It makes you wonder how many get killed by porkies that you never see. I figure they must pack up and harass the porkie to kill them likely one gets it by the face and away they go but that is just a guess. No bobcats here and I've never seen where a lynx killed one but many of the lynx will have a few quills in there toes.

I'd caught 2 porcupines in a couple days and then the next had two fisher in those sets- had to release one as you can only harvest 1 in Pa.
This is the reason I ask as my bobcat trail sets also often produce porcupines and shortly thereafter a bobcat appears. Again I have a small sample size in Pa as we can only take 1 bobcat also.
