I think I’m done for the season. I’ve had the last 5 coyotes I’ve caught stolen, along with traps. Catch circle, fresh blood, boot tracks that ain’t mine, no coyote and no trap. I’m to the point where I just might pull my sets and hang them up till I can get access to property where I know I’ll be the only one checking my traps, cause I think I got a few guys checking them for me now. If they want the coyotes, they can go put in the work.

That’s crazy Bob. I figured with the general big game seasons over, there would be less of that. Everyone’s heard about “$100 coyotes” I suppose. I feel for ya

Its probably one thief. People get it in their head that they trapped here the last 20 years they have exclusive rights. Some guys will try to intimidate people that are local when then they come in from out of state. You need to find the guy and deal with him. Harshly. Packing up is exactly what he wants. If your not tresspassing or breaking any other laws, stick up for yourself.

Make sure you let your CO about having you catch and trap stolen. I know some think the CO will not do anything, but he/she can't if there is no complaint. JMO

Hang a couple of cameras. Catching a thief in the act is more rewarding than catching any furbearer.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I agree. Try the video setting to catch them in the act.
Post photos after.

Sadly, I've found if we do most of their work, getting boot/tire tracks/photos, etc, then the whole process is expedited.

He may feel that catching poachers is more important than getting a few traps back for somebody, BUT, if they don't have to do any investigation, cuz you already have, BAM, they have no excuse.

I feel for you Bob. I lost two in december and they didnt even try to hide the crime scene. Blood pool in the catch circle, coyote tracks in circle, and boot prints in the circle right on top of the fresh torn up dirt. No casings nearby so am guessing bot were shot from a ways back. Didnt take the traps just the coyote. Wasnt always the case for me in past but at least they didnt take the traps this time. Before the monsoons hit here there were truck tracks around every draw and through all the fields. The world becomes their playground here and they drive wherever they want to try to flush out coyotes. It's crazy. I always set at least 1/2 mile back into the sections and where they cant be seen from the road and I walk in to check, but these idiots drive in anyway so tough to hide a catch from them.
I hope they did try to pull the traps and threw their (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) back out.
In high price coyote years this is a problem for my area. In low price years they would sometimes leave the coyote and take the trap, seriously. Used to find them laying in the catch circle with huge holes through them, and trap gone. Had one trap they evidently couldnt pull one year...so they ran over it about 10x with their truck. Back and forth, back and forth, it was smashed beyond repair. That one still hangs over doorway of my shed as reminder of where I set and the folks I occasional deal with here.
I'm sure there are good guys and bad guys out there, but I get one or two of these aholes each year and it still makes.me mad when I come up on the scene early in the morning in my flashlight beam. I walk my lines, I work at it, and i still have issues. I have two farms that the landowners want me to trap coon and coyote but i refuse to ever set another trap on either ground because of all the issues I've had on those properties over the years.
Not worth it.
I did pull most of my line yesterday but was due to weather not the usual crumbs and low lifes I deal with here.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Exactly what I thought. Hopefully you can get their trapping or hunting license revoked and some hefty fines. After that, go after them in small claims court for all of your stolen animals and traps.

That is the sickening part of trapping always has been hate a thief... And the dealings I've had trying to get law enforcement to do anything about it.... But 1 time I did catch about a 12-13 kid stealing a mink trap he was crawling up the bank I was standing right there, gave him a good push down the bank in the cold creek he dropped the trap and ran off thru the woods on the other side... I knew the kid spoiled little brat didn't need the money or trap just was messing w/ me... first year out trapping w/ my Dad we used a canoe to get to the back of this swamp and laid out 40- 50 sets and used ribbon to flag second night they stole every trap Jackson Cty MN.... we were just getting into trapping we skinned like 25 rats the first catch then filed a police report and went home, sad trip. Certain places in N. Minn forget it 10 mile radius of Cass Lake feel like donating? Down by Badura the old man running the forestry seedling program there will steal hundreds of dollars of beaver traps (he's gotta be dead by now, I'm pretty sure the evil curses I thought up should have finished him off) Law enforcement a JOKE, no justice for a trapper... What I've found is you make a complaint they watch YOU!

I’ve found, down here at least, that thieves and trespassers don’t care for the law to be called. So, when caught, I give them the option of calling the law first before we settle our differences. When they refuse or decline, we work the problem. Not sure what brand of hammer I have, orange handle from MTS, but that digging part on the back will punch through metal. Enough holes and what wasn’t sold already magically returns. I take pics of faces, VIN’s, license plates, and get phone numbers (call right then and there to make sure they aren’t fake). Anything else comes up missing they are the first to be called and I give them 2 days to have whatever is missing returned or I’ll be by for compensation. The last time, 2 years ago, they swore it wasn’t them. I told them it probably wasn’t but they ran with the crowd that probably did know. By day 2 my camera was back with the SD card erased.
Over the last 2 years we haven’t had any issues since my last encounter. Took a few face to face meetings with different folks, but once the word gets out, they avoid that place like the plague. Granted we are a small town area and I’m friends with the entire Sheriffs Dept. helps too.

Public sucks I don’t do public it’s the same story it seems like. Not worth what a guy might do if he does catch them.

Bob, are you in Garfield county by chance? I dealt with the same thing when I trapped there even on private ranches. People with side by sides would drive around spotlighting and taking everything they could.
It is a real shame that there are individulas around here like that.

I don't like low life trap and critter stealing varmints at all. I used to let it get the best of me. Now when it happens, I just tell myself hopefully it was someone who doesn't trap much or doesn't trap at all. But the excitement of a critter being there in front of them so close ….. well hopefully that could instill the start of a life long passion for the sport. Not one of being a thief and unethical sportsman, but perhaps if it was some youth, they will grow past that "foolishness of our youth thing" and turn into a fine honest being that will help our sport SOMEDAY! I am pretty sure we all have done something in our yesteryear we would not do today. That said it still sucks being the "victim" of someone else's thievery and I would certainly love to catch one in the act so I could kinda help nudge him towards a turn-a-bout in the way he views other people's property and hard work. . Usually two ways to look at everything. Just gotta hope for the best!
